Is the A1 style upper Colt uses for thier 9mm basically the same as a 5.56mm flattop upper? I know the case deflector is a bit different, but are there any other differences? If I bought a Colt 9mm and wanted to convert it to an A3 style upper, would the internals swap out with a stripped 5.56mm flattop upper? Thanks |

Cool. The reason I'm asking is that I'm kicking around the idea of having a 9mm twin of my 5.56mm gun. I want to set it up identically to the 5.56mm for training up close on steel and indoors at ranges not set up for rifles. I MAY have found a Colt 9mm carbine for a very decent price, but it has the A1 style upper and of course I want the flattop. I just saw that RRA makes the type of A4 9mm upper receiver I would need. Should all the Colt parts swap right over or are threads, pins, and other assemblies different? Any other thoughts, comments? Thanks |

yes indeed, you can do the swap with no problems, the RRA 9mm uppers are nice as they are the slab side type that you can use the plactic Gas/shell deflector on For what it is worth, Colt did a special run of the 9mm flat top uppers, but they used the 5.56 type upper except it had no forward assist and no shell deflector, but still had the gas tube hole |

looks good Just to get an idea, what's an average/fair $ charge to have this type of swap (upper parts) done (ballpark)? Are there any 'smith who specialize in the 9mm or is a pretty basic build which any AR 'smith could do. I'm still reading up on the 9mm AR and the only thing which worries me is the bolt catch breakage. That seems to be being addressed on a bunch of different levels so it looks like remedies are out there. |

Same thing, all colt except the upper receiver.

Since I'm not sure how old the Colts I'm going to look at are, should pin size concern me? Is it possible the pins would not work with the RRA-A4 upper? Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question, but I'm new to Colt's and don't have any experience with the 9mm version. Thanks. |
You generally have to jump on Colt 9mms when you see them. They don't last long, and most people who get one tend not to cut loose of them. |
At worst you will need to buy a pin conversion set ($20 MAX). That would only be if you bought a 9mm upper that was large hole (I don't think they were though) and had a small hole lower. |
Looks good! |
Colt did make some large hole A1 9mm uppers, I picked up one here on the EE awhile back to mate with my RR SP1 if (when) it ges approved. |
