Hey guys,

I was flipping through the new bushmaster catalog and saw their 20 inch .22lr upper with 2 mags.  Does anyone have one of these and can post some experience?  If this isn't decent, what are some alternatives?  I'm starting with the highpower stuff, and just want something to practice 50-100yds with in addition to a fun gun that doesn't break the bank.  Thanks!

I'd like to know the same thing - actually, I'm new and rather ignorant still about the AR-15's, having just picked up a Bushmaster off of a buddy of mine for a price I just couldnt beat.  That being said, can you just swap uppers and you're done or is there something that has to be modified to allow for different magazines to fit in the lower receiver, such as for 9mm or 22lr?

Steve,

I know that for the 22lrs you need a different buffer and spring with the upper, which is really easy to replace.  You could even do that at the range.  The 9mm requires a little bit more though.  From what I've read and remember, I believe that the hammer and buffer must be changed and either a magblock put in or use mags that have thick pieces of something to make them fit in the magwell.  Besides that, welcome to the dark side.

"dark side"...no kiddin.  I read someone say on another thread here that he was "a caliber whore"  -yeah, i can feel for him!  I love my new AR as it is my first, but, want some more variety already!  I live in the country and can shoot in my front yard, although, would prefer not to shoot too much .223, but no one seems to notice .22 too much.

I'd like to find a decently priced (read: cheap!) scope as the steel sights aren't my favorite just yet.  Also, looking for a 22 conversion kit I guess - any idea if the Ciener kit is sufficient for thousands of rounds of plinking?

The Carbon-15 upper from Bushmaster is VERY light, so be aware of that if you buy one.

I picked one up recently and it is a blast to shoot. Very acurate, very reliable, VERY cheap to shoot all day long.

It will not cycle most match ammo, but does just fine with CCI Blazer, Mini-Mag, Remington, etc. Do NOT use Hyper velocity ammo, only high velocity.

It is a 30 second swap to go from .223 to .22LR uppers. Just take the upper off, remove the buffer and spring, replace with the Bushmaster .22LR buffer/s (use both tubes for an A2 stock), put the spring in, slide the upper into the lower, push the pins, and viola'...ready to shoot.

3rd time out with my carbon 15 .22 upper. What can I say ,,, nothin but problems. FTF, FTE, and today after underloading the mag by 2(because for some reason the cheesy mags cant hold 10 rounds without twice the problems) the second round blew out the side of the case due to FTE and 2nd round not seating all the way in the chamber. Normally an AR-15 wont fire unless the bolt is fully closed, But not on a .22 upper, atleast a bushy upper. Luck would have it I wore my saftey glasses but no hearing protection which intern has my right ear still ringing. After digging out the blown out casing pieces and dislodging the bullet from the barrel I didnt notice anything else physically wrong with it. As to what to do now,,,Guess ill try to contact Bushmaster and let them know im not at all pleased with this unit and ask for a refund. Any other suggestions? I just feel for the money I spent I would be better of buying something that works , or am I wrong do I have a lemon? Any info on this subject would be helpful...
Guess ill have to wait till Monday to call them Bushy-Shooter Out...

Well that makes two Bushy .22 kabooms recorded here versus about six with DPMS. It happens.

What kind of ammo were you shooting? I suspect ammo incompatibility might be your problem. I've had good luck with Winchester Dynapoints in my DPMS, with Federal Walmart Bulks in second place. These things seem to prefer the copper-washed bullets, which also shoot much cleaner.

Day 1
Ive been shooting Remington Brass plated hollow points with nothing but problems. The last time out a KABOOM made me a little weary as to wanting to keep it.

It will not cycle most match ammo, but does just fine with CCI Blazer, Mini-Mag, Remington, etc. Do NOT use Hyper velocity ammo, only high velocity.

Day 2
I would not suggest Remington as to it only created problems for me, CCI Mini Mags and Federal Bulk 36 grain Copper Plated  Hollow points fed just fine. After regaining my shyness and overchecking the bolt making sure it closed after every cycle for the first 75+ rounds I found some courage once again to empty almost full mags without checking for the bolt to close completely. There were a few times the magazine would have a problem causing a FTfeed and a few missfires but all in all im alot happier with it.

Hope this helps

Anyone have any experience with the full metal upper?

Anyone have any experience with the full metal upper?

I'm pretty sure its the same as the carbon15 Finiky about the ammo but just as good. After further inspection of the upper there is no visible damage to any of the plastic parts. Being an auto technition for over 10 years Ive seen alot of plastic parts wear thru metal parts so im not concerned in any way that the carbon 15 class will let any1 down.
