I ordered 2 Colt 9mm 32rd magazines from J and T, and got to try them out today.  They are way better than the converted Uzi mags - they ran 100%.  And the Bolt-Hold-Open was quite pleasing.  I'm not sure if the mags are worth $75 each, but I'm sure I'll be getting a few more anyway.

Which mag block are you using? Do your Uzi mags have the original springs?

I suppose the Uzi mags have the original springs.  I got them from RRA, and haven't messed with them.  My mag block is the one-piece, bottom loading model.

So your mag block is an RRA, correct?

Do you have a dedicated lower?

I bought the mag block off of gunbroker; I don't know who made it.  I do have a dedicated lower, with the 9mm hammer.

Ok, last question. What kind of reliability issues were you having with the Uzi mags? What kind of ammo were you using?

If it is RRA its not the newer style.  From what Im told they dont accept 32's at all.

The reason for all my questions is that I was trying to figure out what was causing your reliablility issues.

I've done a lot of research on the various 9mm AR builds and have decided to go with an RRA upper and lower, a genuine Colt mag block and Uzi mags modified by M60Joe (notch and BHO function). I've decided that a complete 9mm AR would be one way to avoid some of the potential relialiblity issues. That would allow me to have all the 9mm specific parts and I will be able to attach the mag block with a screw or pins.

Once I get all my parts together, I will have them sent to M60Joe so he can do all the "necessary" mods and test it for reliability. He seems to be the go-to man for 9mm AR work.

Part of the reliability issue may stem from the mags themselves (not just how they were converted). I have (had) Uzi mags of several different types. Some of them lock up tight, some have just a little play in the mag well. My theory is that the "play" can be enough to induce an occasional fail-to-feed, where the bullet nose strikes the base of the feed ramp. This is the ONLY type of malfunction I have with my converted Uzis. If I cared enough to mark the mags and do some high-volume reliability testing, I bet I'd find the malfunctions always happened in the same mag(s). As it is, I'm slowly getting rid of my 20 and 32rd converted Uzis and replacing them with factory Colts (which have thus far been trouble-free). I think I'm going to keep my 25rd Uzis (all IMI) and have Joeblack add the BHO tab, since Colt doesn't make a 25 and I find these the most convenient size.

It was my thinking that the 25 round would be my choice due to it's size as well. The only downside would be getting replacement springs for them. Wolff only offers 20 or 32 rnd mag springs but one could always cut down a 32.

I'm also hoping that a genuine Colt mag block won't have any problem with a consistent fit. I know I need to choose my mags carefully. Heck, I might just spend the bucks and get some Colt mags.

Thanks you sharing your experiences. I really appreciate it.

I have a RRA upper on a Colt Lower with old style RRA block.  I had several Joe Black mags and one RRA mag.  All fed fmj's of any size without any problem.  I have several thousand rounds of Speer 124gr JHP that would not feed.  The round would bounce up and lodge on the top of the receiver.  This happened for the first 10-15 rounds in each magazine.  I was about to get out the dremel and cut into the feedramp on the block when I located five new Colt 32's.  Problem completely solved.  I can bump an entire 32 rnd mag of JHP without issue.  The followers on the UZI and the Colt are very different.  So to wrap it up, every reliability problem I have had was magazine related.  The UZI's were great for FMJ, but not much else.

My RRA Uzi mags would cause the occasional stovepipe; usually the last round in the magazine.  Nothing monumental, but enough that the Colt mags are a huge improvement.

Well, I shoot FMJ about 99% of the time so the mod'd Uzi mags should work fine for me. M60 Joe will also be assembling my 9mm AR, modifiying my mags and testing the whole schebang for me. I do plan on getting some genuine Colt mags at some time but it sounds like the Uzi mags will work fine for my purposes.
