With my new Colt M-4 6400 rifle, im thinking of a 22 conversion, at least temporarily, till I get funds for a whole upper.

Who makes the Better-Best conversions. Do they come with the mags. Anything to watch for.

Im mainly shooting stell falling plates at about 15 yards.

Thank You

The Colt unit is the best for reliabilty, mag capacity is limited to 10 round,

The Ciener is problem-matic, needs tinker to run, and hi-cap mags are available.

The dedicated barrel (Keuhl-Accuracy Speaks-KKF?-Willbird) all use a 1x16 blank, cut at chamber end to accept the 22LR round as a normal  22 barrel would, but uses the Ceiner rail and bolt to work the thing.

I use a US Army M261 in an AR15A2 … runs like clockwork with CCI minimags, the 10 round inserts just slip into a standard USGI magazine.

if you have time to save up, a dpms .22 upper is worth the wait.

Do you have a model # or cost. I might have to post on the EE to find one.  This might be the easy way for the time being.

AFAIK the Colt conversions are out of production, but the DPMS is supposed to be the same design.  And the mags will work with their complete uppers if you decide to go that route in the future.  Hi-caps are rumored to be available after the ban from an English company (and maybe DPMS now too?).  It might be possible to upgrade to one of their uppers and save the cost of the bolt.

My Ciener has basically run OK out of the box, although I have worked on the extractor.  I think most of my issues were ammo-related.  Hi-caps are available now and almost certainly will be after the sunset.  Most of the "semi-custom" uppers like Kuehl or KKF or Accuracy Speaks are designed around this kit so the mags and the kit itself would be compatible if you wanted to upgrade that way in the future.

The Army and Air Force kits are not in production but can still be found.  Compass Lake uses the M-261 (I think Army?) as the basis of their uppers and claims they're the best.

I'm happy with my Ciener, but I'd have to consider the DPMS if I were buying one now.

I like that COmpass Kit. But WOW, they list it at almost a Grand!

The DPMS is about half that amount.
