Hey everyone,

Just installed the Ciener kit in my Eagle 16" A2 (review below).  While doing some plinking, I had a round chambered, and due to interruption didn't take the shot, and dropped the mag, and went to eject the chambered round, and nothing.  No extraction.  Had to shoot it into a nearby tree.

Is this true of all Cieners?  It extracts fine while shooting, just not a unfired round.

Review: Love it.  Never wanted it for anything but plinking <50-75 yards and accuracy is excellent. Can put an entire magazine in a 1" circle at 25 yards.  Informal plinking at 50-75 yards is always on target <2-4" objects.   Most suprising thing is my .223 zero (match sights) is right on with the .22.  Should figure any trajectory out to 50 yards should be pretty straight, though.  No problems in 500 rounds of Remington jacketed ammo.

Cheers,

Michael

I've had that problem with mine.  But it was always a "dud" round that I needed to extract so I had to hold the bolt open with one hand and use the point of my pocket knife to slide the round out of the chamber.

The tip of the extractor seemed to be broken off so I took the extractor off and filed the end to get a sharper point, but I can't be sure how much it helped.  (It seems to have broken off a little again, but I haven't had the problem in a while.)

I think the problem may be partly ammo.  If you get a slightly oversized round it'll stick a little bit and it won't extract well.  Cleaning the chamber won't hurt either.

AR_prof,
This has always been the case with my Ciener conversion kit and I believe this is the way it operates.  I don't consider this a problem for me.

no,  that is not normal.

send it off to Kurts Kustom or KUEHL PRECISION ... either of them can tune it up to work great.

My Kurts Kustom worked for 3 years without any issues... I am having issues with it now but its going back for a tune up.  I still have two of KUEHL PRECISION .22lr uppers that have zero problems at all but I am only on the first couple months of use.

it can be fixed... just need to find someone good with them.

Thanks!

I'm probably going with the Keuhl upper eventually, so the Ciener will go in anyway.  Just wanted to make sure this was "normal".

Cheers,

My conversion kit is the Kuehl upper.  Again, I don't find this a problem for me as I rarely experience "duds" with CCI Standard Velocity or CCI Subsonic.  No "duds" - no problem.  If you wanted to improve extraction with "duds," you would most likely need to remove a small portion of metal from the extractor so the extractor can catch on the rim of the casing.   I've never "eye-balled" it close enough to say for sure, but this is where I'd start looking.  If you would like to see Kuehl's modified bolt, click here:  home.netcom.com/~brownhen/id12.html

some thoughts on extraction:

common problem is the "nose" of the extractor bottoms in the slot it fits into in the chamber, preventing full engagement of the rim. careful filing of that "nose" will end that problem. as others mentioned, if the tip of the extractor is not sharp, it won't grab as well. a slight taper from each side of the extractor to put a slight point instead of a flat end will assist extraction.  Another impediment to extraction is the tightness of the grip of the extractor on the rim. with the bolt-head inyour hand, you should have to push a cartridge up under the extractor to fit as if it were being chambered. the cartridge should stay in position when the bolt is held horizontal. if the cartridge falls out, there is excessive play. this can be adjusted by taking out the extractor, putting it in a vice and slightly (emphasis carefully) peening the front edge that grips the rim, down. doesn't take much. over time this may wear, but that may be many thousand rounds down range. do the peening adjustment, re-assemble & check for fit, then file the sides as noted above.
If you screw it up, a replacement extractor is only about $15 from JAC.

YMMV, I did mine, it still works, exercise normal caution.
