Last year I built my first AR (16in J&T upper with fluted barrel and Tac. muzzle brake and DPMS forged lower).  Now for some reason I desire a 9mm.......WHY?
1.  What are they good for?
2.  What can they do that a .223 cannot?

And what kind of barrel seems to be the most popular?  e.g. 16in with brake,no brake, fluted, M4 profile (they might not make the later).

Sorry for so many questions it's just that I'm not sure why I want a 9mm.  I might be crazy.

Why? Because they're fun! I enjoy my 9mm AR just as much as my 5.56 ARs.

I've got a 9mm upper for my M16 because:

9mm isn't as loud as 5.56mm from 10"-11" barrels.

9mm is usually/generally cheaper.

9mm doesn't wear a barrel as fast.

9mm is MUCH easier to reload.

9mm is allowed in more indoor ranges than 5.56mm.

9mm doesn't get as hot on full auto round for round.

Sometimes the noise from the 11.5" 5.56mm is good when you want to drive off a shooting bench hog or someone is trying to be Mr. Cool by not wearing earplugs "because they already lost a bunch of hearing".  Sometimes it's nice just like loud music is nice.
Sometimes it's NOT like when a kid or some women are trying to shoot.

There is a time and place for each.

OK, I am very close.  But a couple of questions.

1.  Where is the best (cheapest) place to pick a SOCOM block?

2.  And do you have to modify the sten mags in order for them to work?  And, who has the cheapest sten mags?

By the way that is a sweet set-up.  Don't think I can afford one that short.

Make sure you get Oly if you want a SOCOM block. Also, Oly can make you an M4 in pistol caliber on a special order basis. They did it once with a .45. I saw it with my own two eyes.

One place to get Sten mags is here.

If you live in a free state, you could register your lower as a short barreled rifle for $200 and have your barrel hacked down.

If your rifle is a post-ban your choices on the muzzle are plain and permanently affixed break.

SBR doesn't change a firearm's status with regards to the 1994 Evil Cosmetic Feature Ban.

Going the SBR route can be a little bit of a hassle but it's worth it in my opinion.

Added:
Mine is an expensive one.  Not as expensive as others but pricey.  That 9mm setup is a work in progress.  My 5.56mm setup runs great and is a real attention getter.  I learned a few tweaks thanks to folks in the M16 forum.  Getting this 9mm upper going right wouldn't be possible without info from this forum.

Here's my reason why:

So do the sten mags need any modification in order to "work"?

I have to admit, I think that I enjoy shooting my 9mm more than my 5.56 upper. Ammo is cheap, and mags are cheap. You will not be disappointed with an Oly upper. I love mine.

If using for the Oly system, use the "SOCOM" block and plain STEN mag. If you choose to use STEN in the Colt system, you'll need modified mag blocks, refer to the topic "TACKED" at top of board, as that is where I plan to go with mine.

I also have a Uzi magwell that I keep thinking on using to hold un-cut Uzi mags, just need blocks cut and welded to Uzi magwell to slide Uzi well into the AR magwell like one of those Colt style adapters, AR mag catch to retain, Uzi mag catch to retain Uzi mags.

SBR7_11, your project looks great!  One question, why did you decide to go with this modification when there are thread adapters available?  Possible alignment issues/baffle strikes?

thanks,
Dan

Dan, I guess mainly because I have the AWC MK9 already for UZI, so having the barrel cut to look like UZI seemed an easy way to go (besides the barrel stub to slide inside the O-ring about a 1/2" inside suppressor). I do not lose any barrel length, as I wanted to keep barrel to simlar length as MP5 (8.5-8.7"?), as AR is a SBR already.
Amphibian got me stoked a while back with his M-16/9 and the MK9K set under the handguard on a 5" barrel he had Gemtech make. He has since lost the fat tube, and went to short style tube w/ accessories. He has been most helpful answering questions I have asked in the past.

I liked shooting 9mm so much, I bought a complete Oly Arms PCR-9.

I love shooting .223 Rem but indoors out to 25 yards, 9mm is a better round.  Less noise, recoil, and cheaper.

And you can shoot your AR a lot more and transfer those skills over to your 223 ARs.

Ok, since SBR7_11 mentioned it, I'll post my setup again.  Hey SBR7_11, thought I'd mention to you that I went to the shot show and spoke to Gemtech about my MK9k.  I have a thread mount which was fine until I started competing in SMG competitions.  Now it gets a little loose running around.  I'm going to send my can back and they are going to make me another front end cap for a three lug quick detach setup.  They are going to serialize both end caps so I can switch them if I want to.  I know your MK9 disassembles so you could get AWC to do the same or make another thread mount but since I guess that is kinda moot since Kurt is making you that custom barrel.  Something to think about in the future if you want to put it on something else.

bjones28, a couple more reasons for 9mm are for SMG competitions where you can't use rifle caliber and the 9mm suppresses really quiet.
