Hello laddies,

I'm planning to build a .22 upper for my M4. The big question is what's needed? I've heard that some manufacturers make .22 match barrels for AR-15, is it true? I though about getting a DPMS flat-top upper without the forward assist and shell case deflector and a match grade .22 barrel. Do I need to change the buffer or spring? How about the hammer?

Please list everything that's needed in order to build such a upper receiver.

I'm also considering the option to make the upper integrally suppressed. Anyone have any experience on this one? All comments appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Regards,
Petri

I would recomend getting in touch with Kurt at Kurts Kustom Firearms.  He makes the barrels, or the whole upper receiver.

I can't help you with the supressor, though.

A .22 upper is the same as a .223 upper except for the barrel and lack of a gas tube.  No need to change anything in the lower.  (Exception: really light match triggers might be too weak for reliable ignition.)  Lots of people use uppers w/o the forward assist.  Les Baer makes one that's cheaper than the DPMS one.

Kurt's Kustom, Kuehl Precision, Accuracy Speaks, Compass Lake, and probably others all make .22 uppers that use conversion kits.  DPMS makes a .22 upper that doesn't.  Fulton Armory makes one too.  I know Kurt & Kuehl will sell you just the barrel.  I think the others only sell complete uppers.

I bought just the barrel from Rick Kuehl.  I'm very happy with it.  I got the DPMS Hi-Rider upper for only $69 NEW.  I don't know how the Les Baer would be cheaper than that.
I use a Gemtech Hornet suppressor on my setup.  The picture below is a Gemtech Predator though.
Don't need to mess with spring or buffer that goes into the stock.  It is all contained in the upper of receiver.

At $90 it's not, but the Lo-Pro receiver FlyingFinn mentioned is $125 at Brownells and the DPMS site.

couple weeks ago i bought the last dpms 22 upper from al's custom, live about 1/2 hour away from him. the reason i went with dpms is that it uses colt mags, got a colt 22 conversion and 15 mags. it's balls accurate with wildcats and the federal 22's wally world sells. do need to get a different trigger. i keep getting two shot bursts and on occasion the hammer is not getting caught by the sear.
