Who here is using a FRT with a 22LR. What is your setup? (Page 2 of 11)

I returned the SS I got from super safety shop for them to look at and they ended up giving me a refund. I ordered one from GMR and their printed lever and trip sled. I also bought their pre cut trigger. I will say the quality of the machine work on all the parts seem significantly better than the one from SS shop. I got it installed this afternoon and still no dice. It will run fine in semi auto, but as soon as I try forced reset, I get one shot and a dead trigger. I did get a 2-3 round burst once, but only once. I am about to throw in the towel. |

From what I have been able to find, the bolt design in the M&P 15-22 is not compatible with FRT's. |

Years ago, I had serious bolt bounce problems with my Ciener 22 LR unit in an M16. I finally got it to run by adjusting the timing of exactly when the anti bounce weight slammed into the back of the bolt. I welded up the weight so it was much longer, then slowly trimmed it back to delay the smack-down, so the impact of the weight against the bolt was exactly on time to prevent any bounce. It ran flawless for years after that. Tony Rumore Tromix |

On an old dedicated CMMG M4 type and their steel trip it doesn’t pull forward enough forward to engage the lever. Haven’t tried bending it yet. Welding in that stupid weight would certainly make reassembly a lot easier. Was thinking about making the forward assist functional because of those little cuts. Probably pointless but if I can get it to run, it will be played with a lot. Probably until it gets dirty enough to start jamming. With a suppressor that doesn’t take that long even in semi auto. It never ran reliably at all with a Fostech binary either. At least I can get an occasional 3 to 5 round burst out of it. |

Might run great in semi, but wont run in SS - it's the ammo. |

I have tried two different drop in FRT's, two different SS's, bolt weights, trip kits, this that and other crap. I think I got a 3-4 round burst one time. Between the complete dedicated upper, buying/assembling a lower, mag well adapter, mags, optic and all the various ss parts and do dads, I probably have $1500+ in this fucking thing. Semi auto runs fine, but I can do that with a fucking $200 10-22. I built this thing specifically for FRT and have been shit out of luck. Fuck the NFA and stopping us from just being able to build new MG's. It would be so much easier to have a open bolt with a fixed firing pin. |

I posted this in a different thread, but you didn't want to read it because I wasn't the op. I now have over 2000 rounds thru mine without a single malfunction, even using a BDM 50 round drum mag. Here is my set up. I had most of these parts already from my dedicated .22 build. Has anyone in this thread considered a Super Safety? Very easy to make it work and much cheaper than a 3 position FRT. Some people don't like that the SS uses a push button selector as opposed to a regular AR selector switch. It doesn't bother me. I own other rifles and pistols with different safeties, and I somehow manage to make them work. Here's what I use. This is my .22lr set-up. I have well over 1000 rounds through this rifle with NO malfunctions. CMMG 16" .22lr Barrel and conversion kit. GMR S7 Cam & lever kit https://greymarketresearch.net/kit-o-s7-checkered-curved/ AR22lr Trip. I used the printed lever that came with the trip. https://greymarketresearch.net/ar22lr-trip/ BoreBuddy Charge handle insert Premium Crescent firing pin Simple stainless bolt weight and bolt buffer Hardened power extractor kit Dedicated pressure plug that replaces the buffer BDM 50 round drum magazine. This has worked 100% with no mods. I've been using Federal and CCI Blazer Value Pack ammo with this set up, so different ammo may need a different bolt weight. I bought this ammo for $14 a 550 round box many years ago. I do keep the moving parts well oiled and the part of the trigger that contacts the cam I buffed to a mirror finish. So far, there is no visible wear on any of the parts. If you are using a CMMG type conversion kit, have you polished the feed ramp and buzzed the chamber with a .22 barrel brush chucked up in a drill motor? It really helps on these conversions. |

I did read it, I just have a very similar build but it does not run. As of right now, here is my (still not working) setup. Dedicated bore buddy 16in upper with their quiet collar, sure strike firing pin, recoil buffer, and adjustable weight kit with the ss weights installed, and their adjustable trip kit. Lower is a standard AR lower (spikes). I have the bore buddy pressure plug in front of a H3 buffer and spring (I put a H3 in it as I wanted to be able to use it with 223/5.56 upper too). I started out with a dairyland defense drop in, but the hammer spring on it was too weak to set off 22lr. (it now lives in a 9mm ar with no issues). I then tried the RB/DTT FRT15L3, using the bore buddy adjustable trip adjusted forward and back with no luck. It would run fine on semi auto, but not forced reset. I then tried a SS from SS shop with no luck. (it had quality issues too, so they let me send it back and gave me a refund). I now (currently) have a GMR SS with their printed lever and their trip. Still no dice. Runs fine on semi auto, but not on forced reset. I saw a video on youtube of a guy talking about getting his FRT to run and he said to get a franklin armory extra power recoil spring, tungsten weights for the BB weight kit, and to get rid of the recoil buffer behind the recoil spring. I ordered the spring, but the tungsten weights are on back order from BB. If these do not get it running, I officially give up. I just have no idea when the tung weights will be back into stock. |

I do not have a "standard" collar (it did not come with my upper). Hell, I would have though the quiet collar, being a kinda soft but ridged plastic like material would help with bolt bounce as it gives something soft for the bolt to hit. If I get the email alert for the tungsten weights being back in stock, I will go ahead and order a standard collar too. I got the quiet collar and buffer as it said it reduces noise and I was going to use my suppressor. I had this wild idea in my head I was going to have a super quiet bullet hose. Boy was I wrong. |

Just had a blast trying out a Hoffman with metal lever in an A2 with the GMR 22 kit and a new CMMG bravo drop in. It wasn’t very reliable and had a fairly common dead trigger with Remington thunderbolt and the two tungsten weights I started with. The more weights I added the better it ran. Eventually, I installed all of them and left them floating free because they have a slight dead blow action. Probably should have, but I did not try other ammo once I got it running 100% with CCI. I only used mags with metal feed lips and got kind of tired of shooting because the mag well is really tight. Had to tap the mags out with the action open. It will hold aluminum G.I. style very firmly, but Magpuls have a lot of resistance. Next time I will try a drum mag and some of the mags with plastic lips to see if they work as well. I have one of the CMMG dedicated 22 rifles in the M4 pattern and it’s not nearly as smooth as the GMR. Maybe it’s a cheaper model because the insert is black while the new one is stainless. He got a lot worse with their sear trip. The GMR is buttery smooth and not sloppy at all. I put up a positive review the day it arrived and the owner or whomever emailed me within about 15 minutes giving helpful advice. At like two AM on a Sunday. He said it’s possible the weights can work free and I should consider gluing them in. I think it was also recommended here and on his site to use the plastic lever instead of the steel with 22, but I already had the steel installed and it ran great. I didn’t think to order a charging handle insert but it didn’t give any trouble. The barrel is a 1:9 and group size could’ve been better. Or maybe it’s fine just the way it is because you get a little bit of spread. If you want the whole bullet hose thing. I’m going to try a 1:12 or 1:16. I’d be cautious with a high twist rate and a suppressor. Maybe use one of a larger caliber just in case. It’s the most fun I’ve had with a gun in a long time. Highly recommended. |

Had a psa 5in barrel and bolt with GMR kit ran like a sewing machine. Weight or no weights made no difference. Decided I wanted to turn it into a commando style pistol. Rebarrel with 9in barrel. Same bolt and SS. Same everything except barrel. Will not run reliably in SS or single. Normally I get 1 round the dead trigger over live round. Weights or no weights no difference. Slow mo video makes me thing I have a bolt bounce going on or the bolt isnt moving far enough back to reset. Got annoyed with it and put it on the back burner for now. |

Just tested my setup and got a couple of bursts. Had dead trigger in SS mode and even semi a couple times. RTB 9.2" barrel PSA/CMMB BCG with Bore Buddy upgraded extractor spring GMR SS GMR weight and trip kit (all weights installed and no slop in lever) CCI Standard was first. A couple short bursts then dead trigger. Even got a dead trigger on semi until I topo the trip out. Remington Golden Bullet was second. Loaded 10 rounds and got a 9 round burst then dead trigger. CCI Mini Mags were third. No bursts. Dead trigger in both modes. Back to Remington and no bursts again. Dead trigger happened in both modes. I had zero lube on the BCG, so I'll try that based on some replies here. Any other ideas? |

There was an AR22 video on reddit this week from a poster that was shooting all different types of ammo and listed his build components. I'd love to be able to shoot more than 2 brands of ammo in mine. https://www.reddit.com/r/supersafety/comments/1o10bja/ar22_ss_ammo_testing/ So went ahead and tested 10 rounds of each of the .22LR ammo types I had on hand. The relevant parts are BoreBuddy 12 inch Apogee Upper with Charging Handle + Insert, CMMG .22LR bolt, Borebuddy Extractor with High Power Spring, Borebuddy Crescent Firing Pin with Heavy Spring, Grey Market Research full AR22 Bolt Weight kit, Super Safety Shop Aluminum AR22 Trip, Super Safety Shop D2 Steel Super Safety (shimmed the lever with some aluminum tape), Self SS Cut Trigger, Mil-Spec Hammer + Disconnector, JP Enterprises Enhanced Ignition Reliability Trigger Spring Kit, 30 dolla PSA lower, and Strike Industries Pic Rail Backplate slapped a trimmed cork to put some pressure on the bolt. Standard lower parts. ROF guy if you would please :) Edit: Also using a HuxWrx Flow 22 Supressor |

I bought one of the TX22's and the frt for it. I tried it out over the weekend and I had one time on the first mag when I had a dead trigger ad a live round in the chamber. After that, I finished up 200 rounds without a single issue. It pisses me off that this damn little $250 pistol with a $5 part in it will run damn near flawlessly, while this AR22 I have between $1k and $1500 I have only been able to get a couple 5 shot bursts out of. |

I want my tx22 to run suppressed. I’ve got steel striker plate replacements coming and I’m adding a rds and plate. I think that will get me to where it will function suppressed. If not at least I’ll have that consumable part replaced with metal. |

Borebuddy adjustable super safety trip. You may have success with a 3D printed SS trip, I did not... Borebuddy adjustable bolt weight kit. Base what kit you buy off your barrel length or just get the deluxe kit that includes the SS and aluminum weight housings. You can also try the 3D printed bolt weight housing, the one I got from GMR didn't last a full mag before sending the weights out the back... The above parts are must have. These are helpful and may also be required... Borebuddy pressure plug. Borebuddy recoil spring tuning kit. Borebuddy extractor. Borebuddy superstrike firing pin. Borebuddy tungsten weights if you need more mass, I did not using the deluxe kit and 4.5" barrel. Borebuddy charging handle, helps avoid cases getting stuck in a regular CH, real PIA when it happens not if ![]() KVP Reduced power hammer, trigger and disco springs. These may seem counter productive but I've had the best success using them and haven't had any light strike issues so far. Not only do the springs reduce the amount of bolt force needed they enhance the SS reset making the trigger less sensitive to finger pressure. With some or all of that, don't expect 100% function. I'm bumping 99% on a good day. I'd say 95% is closer to average... still fun IMHO. Then again, you may very well end up like Jeeps-and-guns, frustrated and poorer ![]() |

My AR .22 runs brilliantly as-is, so I'll need to see if this is something I want to bother with. I have buddies with FRTs, so I can get my fix that way. |

I’m going to try a 1:12 or 1:16. I’d be cautious with a high twist rate and a suppressor. Maybe use one of a larger caliber just in case.
