I knew a guy who had a 25% markup on repairs to things that I brought in a ziplock baggie.
Apparently it is a much better idea to NOT take it apart before I know just how it works.
It seems I need to remove the buffer tube to install the singlepoint sling anchor.
Bad idea to take it apart outside. I was hoping the dog would fetch it, but the splash tells me that it flew all the way to the river...
Guess I will have to dive for it. Brrrrrrrrr!

You didn't remove the buffer and spring before removing the tube?  Or you didn't catch the piston before it flew away?

Whichever is the case, check out YouTube if you are not sure what your doing working on a gun.  There are videos of almost every gun and procedure on there.

Good luck man.

Is it the buffer tube spring detent you're missing?

If so, you're in luck:
1. it's a really inexpensive part.
2. There's a minor trick, but it's really really easy to install.

Consider it the cost of admission for the lesson of "don't disassemble shit past field strip outside"

Good luck

You can get one on Ebay it's only about 5 bucks.  Don't feel bad the first time I took an M1 Garand bolt apart I launched the ejector and spring into the great unknown.  At the next gun show I stopped at an old parts dealer and told him what I needed.  All he said was, “So you took your bolt apart did you?”.  It was a $1.00 lesson in humility.

Well he said he thought the dog would catch it, and he heard it splash into the river.  I'm thinking it either the tube or the buffer that's gone.

It happens to everyone at least once. Easy fix.

One time on my first AR the buffer tube started to rotate left and right just a bit. I started to unscrew the tube until to my surprise the endplate rotated far enough to launch the detent spring into oblivion.

I then continued to unscrew the tube until the buffer retainer pin launched itself into the ceiling narrowly missing my face, luckily I had taken the buffer out by this point. Unscrewing the tube while the castle nut was still tight and staked to the end plate chewed the threads on the tube to shit.

Mind you this is before I know anything at all about what any of these parts are called or their function. So anyway I reused the buffer tube, Castle nut, endplate and buffer etc. Had to buy new detent and retainer pin and the springs to go with them. Tightened the castle nut down then snugged it up by hitting a flathead driver with a hammer on the wrench slots.

That rifle ran great for thousands of rounds after that.

That was 5 years and 10 ARs ago

Haven't done anything that dumb since
