I have a Colt 6920 M4 rifle and was practicing magazine insertion, racking, safety on off, manually removing cartridge from chamber by racking, etc.
Over time I noticed about half the time I expected there to be a cartridge in the chamber there was not one. After some investigation, I think that if the trigger is 'cocked' (for lack of a better term), racking the slide with a full mag will not feed a cartridge. Meaning if I had already racked the slide once empty, but had not pulled the trigger, if I then put in a mag and rack the slide the chamber remains empty. If I dry fire first, then racking the slide with a full magazine always appears to load a cartridge. Is this behavior correct for the rifle, or am I screwing something up? Because I use the 6920 for home defense, I want to ensure that when I rack the slide with a full mag then a cartridge is loaded into the chamber 100% of the time (would hate to be surprised pulling the trigger at a BG and hearing 'click') Thanks, Steve |
| I am new to the AR world but, is it possible that something is preventing the magazine from clipping into position when you cock the charging handle before? Maybe the magazine isn't all the way in causing the bolt to miss catching the first round. To me it sounds like a feature that you will just have to be aware of an factor into your practice unless you "jimmy" past it. |

The hammer position has no effect on stripping a round from the magazine. Are you sure you are pulling the charging handle fully to the rear each time? Mag fully seated?
Try it with only 5 rounds in the mag. I hope you are practicing all of the safety rules while you do this. If not, LED tvs are pretty cheap right now, in case you shoot a hole in it. |

The whole point of the bolt hold open is to allow an empty mag to be replaced by a full one then drop the bolt and chamber a round. Are you riding the charging handle home? The position of the hammer does not affect the roung going into the chamber. Mag sitting to low or out of spec bolt will. Check with other mags. A bad mag can do this. Get some dummy rounds to check function. If you chamber a round over and over make sure the projectile is not getting pushed back into the case. This could cause catastrophic failure. |
