I bought a DPMS AR-15 in 223/5.56 caliber and love it. My question is - can I use the same lower on a 308/7.62 upper without any modifications? Sorry if its a stupid question, like I said Im a newbie to guns and just dont know much. Thanks for any responses

No, the 7.62 NATO round is much longer than a 5.56 NATO.

This ^^^

AR15 is the small frame or "mouse frame" AR

AR10/SR25 is the large frame AR and is required for the .308 family of cartridges.

Also something to keep in mind , with the .556 platform, uppers, lowers and part's for the most are all interchangeable due to the "Mil" spec. (except for the Colt's with the .170" Dia. pins and so on) With the 7.62 / 308 builds you have different manufactures offering their own designs. Armalite, Noveske and other's parts will interchange but not with DPMS, Bushmaster and others of their design. There is no Mil. spec. design with the 7.62 platform. Choose which style of platform works best for you.

You can use the same lower on the 7.62x39 (AK round) but not the 7.62x51 (308 round).

I'm sure if you wanted to handfeed the rounds into the upper and with some modifying (opening up the ejection port opening) it could possibly be done.

At which case you might as well buy a bolt action, You would end up with better accuracy.

But after all is said and done, Just buy an AR 10.
