Hello
I'm in the process of deciding which AR I want to buy so this is my first post. I'm looking at an Alex Pro Firearms Econo Carbine. It has a standard mil-spec trigger, 16" Wylde .223 barrel, 1/9 twist, phosphate/carpenter 158 bolt and straight M4 feed ramp, carbine length gas system and Magpul MOE handguard. It also comes with a mounted Vortex Strikefire red dot. I've researched the barrel, twist, feed ramp and bolt and from what I can figure out they are all good. Any opinions on this? Thank you for the input! |

Read as much of this forum as possible, read 25 times more than you type. Not being an azz, just being honest, unless you have money to burn. I have never heard of the company you speak of and don't feel like you know enough to get into this platform. Or you can ignore me and think you do know enough and you can learn the same way that I did, better apply for a few more CC and get real familiar with the selling rules on this forum, cuz you will be using it a lot. The choice is yours. This forum offers everything you need to know at a cost of $0.00 anually, can't beat that. Every question you have is probably answered multiple times each week on here, that is why I said to read more than you type. If you still can't find an answer ask and it will be given unto you, plus a lot of opinions that you will learn to sort through. When you get ready to buy I highly recommend PSA for quality and an incredible price. Also don't forget the tride and true, Spikes, Colt, BCM and a handful of others. You will come a long way in a short time if you do what I said. |

Concur with NCHornet.
I don't like to "blast" any brand online but if you are looking for a general purpose range, home defense and TEOTWAWKI rifle, there are other options. The 2nd question is what is your budget and what does it include (optics, sling, mags, etc.)? The short answer is: get a Colt 6920 for $800 or so and you'll have a gun that chances are high you will be happy with and it can also be easily modified down the road when you figure out what other accessories/options you want/need. |

I have a smith and wesson. It has been absolutely 100% reliable after 3000 rounds. As good as colt imo.
I would check out the m&p15 magpul edition. It is midlength gas system vs carbine so it shoots nice and soft. Also has 1/8 twist barrel so it will stabilize light grain bullets and heavy grain bullets for long distance shooting and hunting. http://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2013/2/20/smith-wesson-mp-15-moe-mid/ Great time to buy an ar15. Definitely a buyers market. I highly recommend smith and wesson and colt for good quality entry guns. There are cheap ones out there but smith and colt have good bang for buck. |

I think I've narrowed it down to either an S&W M&P15T or RRA LAR-15 NSP CAR or RRA LAR-15 Delta.
I want to spend right around $1000. I have an M&P 15-22. I do have some (I think) MAGPUL flip sights and a Vortex red dot that I meant to use on my 15-22 but it could be used on this. |

Welcome aboard. This ^^^ The other two are consumer grade and even though this Colt is built for the consumer market, it is not consumer grade. Not a Colt fanboy, just sayin'. |
|
The current prices of the 6920 is a good deal considering what comes with it, ( name brand, history, tried and true, and best of all... MIL-SPEC) You will not go wrong with the 6920. Although the others that were listed will be fine and serve you well. The S&W is a good gun but with the current market you can do better for not much more. NOTHING wrong with the M&P though, Great gun. |

Thank you! You are right. I am really leary of the off brand. What about Rock River Arms and Smith & Wesson? I am going to make it a project to look through this forum. Very very good. Some will bitch about the RRA 1/9 twist and while I'm not crazy about that it isn't a real world deal killer for me. |

For your purposes, I would highly recommend the following:
1. Mid-length mil-spec style 2. Chrome lined 16'' 1:7 twist barrel, medium profile 3. M-16 BCG (with a heavy buffer) 4. Good quality iron sights My brand recommendation would be Spikes, they have above average quality at a good price. For optics, I would buy them separately. My personal recommendation would be an Aimpoint PRO or an EoTech 512, both fantastic quality at a reasonable price. Vortex makes some okay stuff for plinking, but not appropriate for SHTF, IMO. |

Hi all, I'm in a similar situation as the OP. Going to get my first rifle (only own a handgun currently). I'd like to keep my budget under $2000 (rifle and optic) for range/hobby use and just home defense. Money isn't an issue but I'm not going to war so I don't need the Ferrari of rifles I'd assume.
Trying to decide between the current sale at grabagun on a 6920 with FDE magpul, or I see they also have a PSA M4 ORC for $652. The PSA price is attractive but then I'd need to pick an optic. If I went that route not sure which I would get as the choice of an optic tacked on to the choice of my very first AR is daunting. I'm sure this question is asked hundreds of times a year here, but what would you choose?!?! :) |

I would first read through this link. It is full of knowledge and it will help you understand the rifle better and the pros and cons of different options.
https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_128/638178_AR15_Basics_forum_FAQ.html I have never had the money to buy everything I wanted for my rifle and complete it in a couple months. But not having the money allowed me to reveal ly read and learn about the differences that are offered and to really decide what I wanted instead of throwing money down just to turn around at a later date and wish I purchased something different. I would rather save and wait to buy what I want the first time rather than by something I know I would want to get rid of the minute I have the money to upgrade. If I was you I would buy a complete rifle instead of an upper/lower separately. The Colt 6920 is a great gun for the $ plus there are a couple different versions you can get it in. And it also includes a rear sight if you are looking for an AR with a front post sight. Things I would make sure my gun had when I purchased. 5.56 x 45 ( this will allow you to shoot 5.56 and .223 spec ammo) 1:7 twist chrome lined barrel (this will allow you to shoot lighter bullets (55gr) all the way up to the heavier (77gr) chrome lined barrel is easier to clean and last longer. I tend to stick with 3 brands that I like. This is JUST MY OPINION. BCM COLT DANIEL DEFENSE Like I said. This is just my opinion I own a DD. I could only afford to purchase the gun at first. Then the sights. I will guarantee once you start you will become addicted and want to upgrade. So if you spend a little more know it will save you allot later. Good Luck in your descision. |

I just built a PSA with 1:7 melonite with front post

| I went through same process recently for a first AR15 under $1500. I bought a new Colt M4 carbine. I love the lightness, features and quality. It has good iron sights, Magpul stock and grips and lighter than the more expensive rifles. I looked at the S&W M&P 15 but like tbe Colt better so that's what I bought. |

Just FYI,
You don't need to be in a big rush to get your first AR. You need to take some time and read. You've gotten a lot of responses with a lot of info. My opinion: don't be so eager to spend a lot of money as fast as you can. That said, wait a little bit and wait for the Colt 6920 OEM1 or OEM2. Both come without stocks, and handguards. This leaves you with the ability to decide what YOU want without having to pay for those and then pay again for something you wanted instead of the plain factory supplied parts. The oem1 has a standard front sight block, the oem2 has a shaved front sight block, so you can pick your poison in the aspect of rails. Optics, search the EE for deals. They always come up and I've never had a bad deal. There is absolutely no reason to pay more than you have to, that is unless you want to. YMMV. |

) but it would be right up your alley and well within your price range.
