| I'm building a SEAL Recon style (recce) rifle. Want to be able to varmint hunt, range shoot, maybe competition if the mood strikes me. I'm liking the Ares Armor Effin A compensator a lot. I know that the traditional recce uses a flash suppressor, but I just want lots of good accuracy. The only thing that bothers me about a compensator is the blast everyone around the shooter suffers. Feel like an adjustable compensator like the effin a would help with that. I've thought too about going with a surefire flash suppressor for the time being, and adding a suppressor later on. Thoughts? Thank you for them! |

I run an Effin' A comp for that very reason, my first AR upper had a JP tank brake at one point. Really worked well but using it indoors was like firing a weapon in an elevator, concussion was everywhere, and using it in our outdoor public range the side blast would blow empty cardboard ammo boxes off of adjacent tables. The Effin' A won't do anything for recoil but in most AR & variants that's not much, but it does do a great job at controlling muzzle rise, and if yours is indexed like mine with only the 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock ports opened there's zero side blast.
As for flash, I've fired 5.56, 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 from a 16" AR barrel and not had any issues with flash indoors or in low light conditions. |

Great minds... I'd also wondered if opening up all the holes in the closest position towards the barrel would be like a flash suppressor in addition. Have you experimented with that? I just want to eliminate muzzle rise to stay on target, while not being a jerk at the range. Sounds like I found it. Thanks a bunch for your wisdom. |

Have you looked at the Griffin Armament FLASH COMP? http://www.griffinarmament.com/M4SD-5-56-Flash-Comp-1-2x28-p/xhp556fc.htm http://www.griffinarmament.com/5-56-Taper-Mount-Flash-Comp-1-2x28-p/tfc556-1-2.htm I did come across those in my pursuit. I remember them being pretty highly rated by someone. I just feel like they're so close in design to the Effin-A but without the customizable aspect that I'd rather go with the A. Plus the price on the A is like 30 bucks cheaper. Thanks for thoughts! |

A flash suppressor and muzzle brake provide very little adverse effects to accuracy.
The advantage of a flash suppressor over a brake is the slightly less noise and noticeably more flash suppression, the disadvantages are more felt recoil and less managed recoil. The advantage of a muzzle brake over a flash suppressor is faster following shots due to more easily managed recoil impulses, but the disadvantages are more noise and the obvious disturbance of cardboard boxes and shooters to your left and right. Sounds like you answered your own question, if a brake is too loud for you... buy a flash suppressor. |

I had an A2 flash hider and everyone around me complained about the noise. It just has a thread protector now. I don't care if prairie dogs see the flash.
My new upper has the BCM mod-0 hider/comp. That will come off shortly. It deafens me. It will have a thread protector also. The flash from a 16' 5.56 is very small and not blinding anyway. I have thought of a linear comp though, there are just better things to spend money on. Imo |

It also makes for a cheap ($7) thread protector. |
