Need pics of the problem

Slide a drill bit the same size in diameter as the gas tube into the barrel nut/receiver and see if it lines up.

As for the broken barrel nut, My carbine has a nicely mangled barrel nut.
Not sure if a broken barrel nut is a problem.
Some should chime in soon to answer that question.

I shot an older Bushmaster for a long time missing a tooth on the nut, no problem, but as you pointed out, the more important question is whether the gas tube is free of obstruction going through your upper.  Unless it is a proprietary brand barrel nut for a rail with a special barrel nut, you should be able to get a new barrel nut at the LGS (except you are in NYC, LoL).  Is your gas block already pinned or the muzzle attachment permanently pinned/welded?
