I took everyones advice and didn't buy a "cheap" red dot and instead bought a "less expensive" red dot. I went with a Primary Arms with a cantilever mount. Seems like a good set up so far.

Today I went out to the back pasture to sight it in. Measured off 50 yards and set up a paper target. After about 18 rounds I had a consistent 5" group from a truck hood. Is that decent for a red dot? Should it be better? I know I'm probably setting myself up for some ridicule but I won't know until I ask. I had just started on the back up irons when the rains came so I'll same hat for another day.
Thanks in advance.

5" @50 is not that great. Did you have rear support for the rifle?

No support except my elbows on the hood of my truck......what should I expect with a decent rest?

Verify optic is tight in mount and mount tight on rail. Your groups aren't terrible but you can definitely improve. What size dot in the optic; 2MOA or 4MOA, larger?

3 MOA dot......everything seems to be tight...and I was wearing my glasses

I would sight in irons first. Shoot have 1" groups IMO. The rifle is capable. Just relax and do 3 shot groups.

Definitely pick up a 10 round mag and throw it in a rest.

Bench rest is your best bet, otherwise prone with a bipod.

5 inches at 50 is a good start buddy. I suggest using a bipod to sight in for irons and a red dot. You will be surprised how much more stable it will make you.
