I recently built an ar15 and have a decent sized game between the upper and lower receiver. From most of the research i've done the gap is normally the horizontal connection between the upper and lower but my gap is near the rear of the receiver where it starts to curve.I shot the rifle today for the first time and it seems to function fine but it's leaving small dinks on the buffer. I didn't know if it's something i should worry about or if this was common.

What upper/lower are you using?

That gap would bother me. If not functionality wise, definitely aesthetically.

The lower is a spikes tactical and I'm unsure of the upper. I bought the upper from runner runner guns.

I would suggest contacting Tom at Spikes (forum name is badazzar)  He would be able to tell you who is out of spec. I'm guessing it is the upper. If it is the lower Spikes will make it right.

Mechanically, if the carrier is pushing the buffer off the buffer retainer, I do not see a problem developing. If a round ring/scratch is forming on the face of the buffer, this is nothing to worry about unless a gouge starts appearing in the area of the ring (this ring is from a burr or sharp edge left after machining around the notch on the carrier that is made to clear the buffer retainer when the weapon cycles).

Basing off your picture, it looks like too much metal was removed from the upper where it curves up with the lower. Because the curve of the upper follows the lower, but then suddenly just goes straight up instead of following the curvature of the lower.

***Upon looking at the picture further, your latch on your charging handle is not even resting in the notch of the upper.***

I wouldn't accept that.

Sometimes when things are out of spec, the buffer retainer can leave a pretty good ring around the outer edge of the buffer.

That ain't right. Talk to who supplied the upper. Do you have another lower to try it on?

+1. I wouldn't be comfortable with THAT much gap. I have a few sloppy fitting uppers (and have no issue with it), but never on the back end like that. That doesn't seem right at all.

I couldn't sleep at night knowing it was in the safe unless I had a replacement upper receiver on the way

Yeah I contacted RunnerRunnerGuns and they told me to ship it back. They are going to test the new upper on multiple Spikes lowers before they send it. Hopefully the new upper will fit appropriately. Seems like RunnerRunnerGuns has good customer service at least. I'll post back once the upper comes in. (Thursday hopefully)

Just received Upper from runner runner guns.  Same sloppy upper fit  that has huge gap on left and top side - plus standard charging handle would not even lock - would not seat.  I just emailed and am sending back - looks like they won't have any better uppers if yours is the same. disappointing.

I will post again with update.  hopefully they have some uppers that are correct...

As others have written, looks like too much material was removed from the matting surface at the rear of the Upper.

It probably just a cosmetic problem (blems anybody?), but it would not be acceptable to me if you paid a "first boat" price.  The Upper is not located on the Lower by the mating edge, it's cosmetic with the pins (Pivot and Takedown) setting location of the Upper in relation to the Lower.  Still, I'd send the Upper back and request a better quality part, or if a better/in spec part is not available, I'd get my money back and go elsewhere.
