Just saying hey, I have been lurking for a while but I am about to finally bite the bullet and get my first AR.  I am looking to buy a complete rifle this time around and maybe build a second down the road once I get more ideas on what I like.  Currently looking at the M&P Sport, the DPMS Oracle and the Olympic Plinker Plus, leaning towards the S&W.  Anyway, just sayin hello, I am sure I will have more questions down the road.

Welcome.

I would go with the M&P in a step above the sport.15T is a nice factory rifle.

Welcome to Arfcom!

Of the options you listed, I'd go with the Smith.

Thanks Guys, My only concern with the M&P Sport (and it is a minor concern) is the lack of dust cover, living in the South West, dust and sand can get in everything, but this is not a duty rifle, more along the lines of plinking, self/home defense and possible SHTF kinda situation.  One of my LGS guys really likes the Oly and says he will stand behind it if I go that route.  I am also considering assembling on myself but I am a little leery simply based on my lack of experience.  If I do go that route I am probably inclined to order and assembled upper, and maybe try putting the lower together myself.  Either way I will keep browsing the forum here for more info as I move forward.

The dust cover will be open after your first shot anyways, so the dust will find its way in there with or without a cover.  As far as building, I did what you are thinking of for my first rifle.  Bought a stripped lower and put all that together, then bought a complete upper.  There are tons of guides on assembling the lower, and people are not kidding when they say that anyone can do it.  Don't be intimidated by it at all!  It is extremely simple and takes minimal tools.  I found it entertaining and you learn a good bit from putting it together.  Either way you will more than likely end up wanting/getting another rifle so the sport may be a good starting place to learn the platform and then you can spec out a build once you find out what you want/need out of your rifle.  With the endless customization options you will have your individual preferences on what you like, which you truly won't find out until after shooting.

I own a Sport, and I've never had an issue with the lack of dust cover. YMMV and there are tons of opinions on this, but that has just been my experience.

Welcome, fairly new here myself.  I started out with an M4-style Colt and couldn't be happier.  Now I'm getting the itch to build.

So based on some soul searching and a bit of reading on this on other forums I think I will use my initial budget $600 +/- and buy a decent quality upper and stripped lower now and then pick up the LBK and furniture as I go.  I am sure I will spend a bit more in the process than to go buy the M&P right now, but I am also pretty confident I will get a better rifle in the process.  Only thing that concerns me at all is the lack of warranty, but that is not a huge deal.

Always in support of a DIY'er.

Hit the EE for new & used stuff. Not every good shooter has to be made with all new parts.

Lots of styles of builds & options out there. Make it your own the way you want.

They were offering a few middy uppers on their industry page a few nights back.  Spikes Tactical Optimum Profile CHF 16" Barrel, Troy Vtac Hand Guard, DSA upper, A2 flash suppressor, nothing super fancy but at least a solid barrel to start and I would have eventually went to a free float hand guard any way.

Very nice.

Now I bet your chompin at the bit to get the lower done.

What are your plans there?

My LGS has a Spikes tactical stripped lower for $109, so I will probably go with that and use a basic mil spec build kit from PSA, and right now I am thinking Magpul MOE furniture, But PSA has Blem Complete MOE lowers for like $150 so that may be the way I go even with the transfer fee I would be under $200 on that lower.  My idea for this, as it is my first, is just a straight forward basic gun.  I was looking for an entry level $600 - $700 dollar factory built to start out with but, after reviewing them, and there are some good guns out there in that price range, I just felt this was a way to get a little bit better components and some of the things I wanted (free float hand guard, 1:7 twist, mid length gas system) that most of the basic guns didn't have with out having to step up to $1000 or better out the door.

Makes sense to build what you want to begin with.
