I've got two steel targets and printed a lot of paper targets but the paper targets are only 8.5x11" and I'd eventually like to be able to shoot from 100-200 yards out and I know I won't be able to see a hit at that far if I can even see the paper. Which targets do you guys like to use? Paper/steel/whatever. I have access to a plasma table I plan to cut out some torso sized steel soon to mount on maybe a 4x4" post but I'm curious what everyone likes. Also curious what gauge steel you guys have used that is appropriate for the .223 or 5.56 round. Thanks.

I mainly shoot steel targets made of AR500 steel at distances but when I want to measure groups I'll shoot at paper targets with large diamond targets on them.

for those long distance paper targets, i use shoot and see targets for accuracy.. and a pair of binoculars of coarse.  Just to know i hit, i use a small water bottle.  i like to see those suckers fly and try to hit them as they roll down the berm.

I like steel past 100 yards because of the instant feedback. We shoot at 8" hanging plates and bowling pins at 200 & 300, with open sights. A 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper stands out pretty well at 300 yards but I can't make out .30 cal holes, nevermind .223 holes.

Either steel or paper should be good to go however your optics need to clearly identify your target you are engaging.  I would recommend a magnifier for your optics in order to clearly identify your target before firing off a round.  There are plenty of good spotter scopes and binoculars that would assist you with regards to identifying your shot placement on your targets.  I hope this helps.
