| I'm going to be building a new A2/A4 clone rifle and I wanted to get a Colt or FN grip. But is there really any difference between one of those and a run of the mill AR15 pistol grip ? |

I find them better than all other A2 grips. Slightly softer materials used I think. All the other grips as flashier (brighter plastic), harder - stiffer in a less pleasant way to the touch. Colt is just better for me |

The difference is extremely difficult to see, but obvious when you hold one. I wasn't "sold" until I got my hands on a genuine Colt A2 grip. It makes all the difference. The shape feels better. No Colt fanboy-ism here either. I had to have one for my A2 clone. My other lowers have Tango Down or A1 grips. The Colt A2 butt stocks are superior as well, although some companies make butt stocks equally as nice. Not so for A2 pistol grips though. Obligatory clone pic: http://i64.tinypic.com/el6001.jpg I posted pics of side-by-side comparison of Colt A2 PG's and generic A2 PG's a while back. So I'll post them here again: PG #1 came off a 1994 production Colt A2 rifle. It has a rubbery feel, but finish is a bit shinier than Colt PG #2, which came off a 2008 production Colt 6920 Colt carbine. PG# 1 is the "beefiest" as far as girth. PG #2 also feels more rubbery than PG #1 and chalky in appearance. Although not as thick or beefy as PG# 1, PG #2 is still thicker than the typical current production A2 PG that came with my CMMG LPK.

I am also on the hunt for a pair of Colt A2 grips . Now let me say the hunt is half the fun.
I carry a little key chain flash light with me when I go to gun shows then look inside every grip . LOL I know where one F2 is . But I'm holding out for a Colt . Oh and I am not paying more than 10 bucks, Ha! |

So to us guys (and gals) that don't really know the difference by looking at them, how would you know if it's a colt grip? Would you look inside for an F2? or are there any more markings to look out for? Early A2 grip markings. "A" followed by 2 , 3 , 4...... inside a circle. Later Colts F1, F2, F3 ..... If I am incorrect please feel free to elaborate .......I will not be offended |

So, would this be considered a colt grip? I see the 'F' and the '1' (or is that an 'i'). http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f55/jer10571/20170331_180321.jpg |

You have an FN A2/A4 PG. The Colts are marked F1 F2 F3 F4 not an F then seprate number. |

You can buy a new-in-sealed-package Colt A2 grip from Brownells for not much at all. They're a chalky gray initially but will be fine after left in a Ziploc w/ CLP for a little while,

| Thanks for the info guys. Just went through my grips and found 1 is an F3. I do not even know where I got it from since I have never bought anything but individual Colt parts. My guess is when I bought a cobbled together LPK from a LGS that had a mix of Colt A1 and A2 parts. That was 9-10 years ago. |
