So I bought an older Colt today from a co-worker who is moving to Kali.  He stated it was "pre-ban".  ETA:  Called Colt.  It was born on April 29, 1989.

I'm not very knowledgeable on AR's I must confess.  I see what looks like a 20" heavy?? barrel, marked with C MP 1/7.
Receiver is A2?? carry-handle style with dull gray parkerizing.  Crappy proof of life pics below.

Questions:

1) Is this worth the $400 I paid for it?  Worth more after Hillary is elected?
2) Pre-ban or post-ban, and what difference does it make?  There are 2 more numerical digits in the serial number.
3) Can a collapsible stock be fitted?
4) Can the barrel be cut as short to the front sight as possible, and still be reliable?  Or does that kill whatever value it potentially has?

Not looking to sell, wanted to keep it as a truck gun, but that barrel is too damn long and heavy.  Thanks in advance for any info!

Keep it as is and buy a different AR for a truck gun.

I am not nearly as knowledgeable as most on here but I would say it is worth at least double what you paid, at least around me in FL.  Also with your concerns about barrel length and stock you would be better trading it for a carbine.  I don't know if you realize but yours is a rifle length which is the longest of the gas systems on the AR.

I second this. DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT use this as a truck gun. This Colt is worth at least 2 1/2 times what you paid for it. More is some states. As for being a HBAR AR-15 A2, if it does not say HBAR on the barrel, then it is not an HBAR. The Colt AR-15 A2 is an excellent shooting AR. I have one myself. As far as a truck gun goes, find something else like a PSA, S&W M&P-15, or the like. Something you do not mind messing up. The Colt AR-15 A2s, being pre-ban rifles, are going to continually go up in value. You got a steal of a deal. I would take care of that Colt, but do take it out and shoot it every once in a while.

Original A2 Colt's marked AR-15 are exceedingly rare. Perhaps a four year window or smaller for years of production. People want them just for the roll mark. Others want them because their states require any AR to be manufactured prior to the 1994 ban or it can't enter the state.

I would keep it, hug it and never let it go. You purchased an outstanding rifle at a fire sale price.

Do not cut anything on that rifle, not the barrel and not the front sight tower! If you want a different configuration simply buy or build a separate upper. Colt rifles from that era use large pin uppers and lowers and you'll need an adapter to accept a standard small pin upper receiver or you need to locate a large pin upper to build the carbine you want. If you put a carbine collapsible stock on the rifle do not loose or sell the original parts. Keep them in safe storage.

At a later date, should you decide to sell it, you'll be able to return it to original form. Congratulations!

Don't be cutting on that gun, they are getting rare and they are collectable, you got a hell of a buy on that one.

Just pick up something else for a truck gun, or build an inexpensive one to throw in the truck, but that one needs to be shot every once in a while and taken care of, you will only make money on it and never run the risk of loosing money.

A Connecticut FFL would probably give you $1K for it.

That my friend is a highly desirable Colt...don't modify it as, this is a R6550 Model:

AR-15 A2 Government Model, Green Label, No sear block, Gov't Profile 1/7 twist barrel, should be a slab side on the mag well. Nice buy man, I'm jealous + yes, you should be locked up for it...you stole that thing.

Two things.
1. Do not fuck up this Colt, you will be cursed for 7 generations, you will get warts, your dog will die.
2. Friends don't let friends move to CA.

Thanks guys for all the good info.

Barrel is marked "C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7.  Magwell is indeed "slick side", round forward assist.  Still has the original cleaning kit in the buttstock and original sling.  No box though.

Looks like I won't be chopping the barrel or leaving it in my truck

I would have torn my pants off trying to get my wallet out fast enough.  As stated several times already: don't fuck with it, leave it alone, it's a very desirable factory rifle.

I will give you $500 right now for Or I might even trade you a PSA M4 carbine for it. Seriously that is a great score. I wouldn't part it out or cut it up. Its a good example of a Colt rifle that is a desirable gun.

If you are still looking for an affordable AR-15 that is an M4 style rifle. I can make a couple of suggestions.  They are as follows.

1 - Eagle Arms Eagle-15 (I think I have the model right). Eagle is a division of Armalite. These rifles run around $500-$600. I have been thinking of buying the last three in stock at my local shop. I can't build rifles this cheap.

2 - Diamond Back AR-15. My local shop has them and no one has had any problems with them. They run $500-600.

3- Aero Precision. I have seen these listed on Brownells for $599. They have them in stock right now for $699.

4 - Build. You can build a good rifle with great parts for $550-$650. Maybe a tad more or less. The barrels will be chrome lined as to where the two I listed at the top are not. It might cost a bit more to build but you get what you want without buying stuff later. I would take a look at Palmetto State Armory. You can find some really good deals. Sign up for their email alerts they are sent out daily. I have built two M4's both are different and both are in the $600-$650 range and are premium kits.

If you are looking for an A2 your best bet right now is to build. I think you could end up with a $500-$550 rifle that would be a top of the line rifle at that price.

Now, will you take $500 for that A2? I had to at least ask one more time lol.

??? An "affordable firearm?"

He paid $400 for it.  That is affordable.

The rifle is worth $1500 all day long.

All the more reason to shoot it and enjoy it!

Seriously.... Enjoy that rifle and shoot it.  Congrats on your purchase.

The OP also posted he wanted a truck gun. This rifle is not a truck gun. I gave some options at getting or building a truck gun.

I think it would make for an excellent truck gun.  Why is it that some people think a "truck gun" equates to "cheap beater?"  My "truck gun(s)" are my most dependable, simple, and favorite rifles that I own. They are equally well cared for... they simply get shot and handled more.

The OP has picked up a killer "truck gun" at a pawn shop basket case price.  Enjoy the rifle for what it was intended.

this is a highly collectable rifle. please treat it nicely. DO NOT MOD IT PLEASE. if you want a AR for defence this will do the job but you might be better off selling it and buying a new AR that can get beat up. This one should stay in a hard case and made a range toy. $400 WOW you got a deal.
A truck gun usually means a rifle you can chuck behind the seat with your tools and crap. Something you dont care what it looks like.
Pre Ban is any AR made befor Sept. 13 1994

Well, some people take better care of their tools than some people take care of their guns.

I wouldn't alter it at all ...I sold one just like this to a fellow in a ban state earlier this year for 1300.00. I paid a little more than you did but an Original Colt civilian rifle like that I'd never alter. Keep as is. My 2 pennies worth

$400 is much lower than the 1989 MSRP.
Now factor in inflation and you got one hell of a deal!!

Shoot it but keep it stock.
