I came across an A2 stock at the gun show yesterday that is a little different.  It is a standard length black A2 fixed stock, but it is constructed of the material like the early A1 stocks.  It has the shiny slick finish. I actually thought it was an A1 stock until I measured it.  Does anyone know the years/time frame these were used?  For some reason, I can not recollect any information about them.  Thanks.

UPDATE:

Here are some pictures.  I also found the number 2 (raised) inside the bottom portion of the stock near the bottom screw hole.  I tried to get pictures of it, but they would not come out.  The first picture is a little out of wack.  The stock is only 10" long.

Not heard of this....at least not by a US manufacturer .....could be an overseas part from one of the Colt A1 contractors,  or a mock up from ....anybody !

Does it have CS on the stock?

Wasn't thinking, CS are A1 length made of A2 material. I had it backwards.

No CS mark that I can find.  It is very well made.  Has no mold lines on the top or bottom.  I have not taken the butt plate off to see if there are any marks inside.  May do that tomorrow.  It matches the finish on original stocks and fore arms exactly, but measures 10".

A quick way to tell if it is military is by the foam inside. A military stock always has a plastic coating over the foam so that the cleaning kit does not damage it. It usually gives it a little darker color. Most commercial stocks have a lighter color foam that can easily be scratched or dented with your fingernail ( no plastic coating). So far as who made it anyone's guess. Sometimes very heavily used a2's will polish down a lot, but not usually that uniform.  Michael

Michael,

Just checked and it does have the plastic coating.  I don't think it is a worn down finish, but it could be.  When I took the butt plate off, everything visible inside and underneath has the same finish.  For now it is a mystery to me.  I'll have it back off this week and look for more signs of any modifications.  I now wonder if it could have been sanded or steel wooled.

Here is D stock that I sprayed with Alumahyde II semi gloss and turned out very smooth and quite well.  Despite how it looks in this photo, it turned out better than I expected.  Could your stock have been refinished?

Seeing how your stock looks, I would have to say - Yes - it is possible.  I can't see any signs that it was painted, but your picture sure looks the same.

That is nice/clean looking rifle - good photography also.  Thank you.
