So a friend of mine just gave me a stock that belonged to his father in law who recently passed away. As a favor to him and his wife I helped him catalogue and value his rifle collection including his ar15s. Anyway the stock came with some other stuff by way of thanks. Anyway I'm not sure what to do with it. It's covered in stickers that clearly meant a lot to his father in law. Do I strip them off or leave them on? They are a bit gaudy for me. Opinions?

P.s. the guy was a marine corps vet

Put it away and save it for your friend.  He might want it again someday.  Don't take the stickers off.

I don't know, that's what hit my brain first.  That's a tough one though.  Do you need it?

Give it back to him and say "The more I thought about it the more I think that you should keep this because it has sentimental value to you and to me it's just a rifle stock"

If he says he really doesn't like it doesn't care about the stickers do whatever you want to but I would remove stickers unless you are a life member of the Virginia shooting club or whatever.
How much does a similar one cost?

No i don't need it at all now was going to use it for an early colt a2 build but i ended up buying a new stock instead. He has an identical one that is on his bushy a2 clone so that's why he gave me that one. I think i'll just hold onto it like you said. I feel like taking the stickers off is somehow ruining the guys legacy, can't explain why.

ztug's got a point.  If you don't need it, why not give it back and maybe encourage him to leave it alone and save it for a rainy day to look at.  Memories.  He might regret getting rid of it.  Unless his Step Dad was abusive or something.

I'd go this route. Either he will store it away or you will. Me, I'd rather it be the other guy (I am horrible with saving stuff, to a point where clutter becomes a real problem!).

So i talked to the guy... and made him an offer he has two sons 7 and 5 and one AR (A2) type rifle. I told him to give that one to his oldest son and i'm going to make him a new A2 using this stock and leave the stickers on. That way when he decides the time is right they will both have one and both have a good memory of their grandad.
