I've been itching for a clone of an M16A2 for a while now, so several months ago I started gathering a few parts here and there for one. I came into a little money recently, and I was able to finish buying parts and amass the tools needed to build it. This was not only my first A2 build, but also my first time assembling an upper from scratch. I read my TM, watched several YouTube videos, and read numerous threads here before I got started. It took me about an hour to assemble the lower, and another hour or so for the upper. After I was finished with the upper, I couldn't believe how easy it was to accomplish.

I was going for the look and feel of an M16A2, but I wasn't terribly concerned about all of the parts being authentic. (See the speccs below.) After assembly and lubing, I took it out to the range yesterday afternoon and zeroed it. Man what a thrill to be shooting a "real" rifle again!

Now I'm going crazy trying not to build another––I've already planned to SBR my patrol rifle.

Specs:
DPMS lower and LPK
unknown manuf. A2 stock
Colt receiver extension
DD bolt carrier & new FN bolt (from EE)
FN M16 barrel (from OOW)
FN A2 upper receiver (from EE)
used A2 handguards (from EE)
FH, FA, delta ring, & other miscellaneous parts from PSA

Looks great! It is easy and fun if you do the research... and get the tools ready. That's a nice AR.. how's it shoot? Accurate? Better than your carbine(s)?

I built my lower on my 20" but I haven't tackled an upper yet but can't wait to do it here soon.  Swapping my YHM free float for a standard black a2 handgaurds from DPMS so I'm gonna have to break it apart.

Sad thing is I'm looking at doing it right for my next build and the tools and things that hold the rifle in the vise etc just cost sooo much lol

Nice rifle ARJJ. The 20" A2 has such a great feeling to it, doesn't it? My A2 is my favorite rifle.

Thanks everyone! Yes, the classic 20" has a nice "heft" to it. It seems to be fairly accurate, although my poor eyesight limits me. I may just slap a cheap scope on a carry handle mount to see what it'll do. I'd also like to shoot an Appleseed with it.

Did you know that Trijicon makes night sights for the A2?

those are nice, what is the difference in the rear flip sights?  Wonder if you can just get the front one.  I'm doing an a4 build with a matech so could only use the front.

The rear sight has a dot on each side. If you want just the front it is $54 shipped. look

Saturn - That's pretty cool. Are those vintage handguards? Where did you get them? I would love to get a set of those handguards.

Amazon.com seems to have the best prices on the full set. I cannot tell the (regular) price as PSA since they are out.
