OK so here is my dilemma. I have a standard 20" barrel I am building and I ordered an A2 front sight for... Well STUPID ME did not read the fine print and see that the front sight does not have the holes for the tapered pins. The barrel on the other hand has the holes already pre drilled. How does one align the front sight on and drill the holes. I have the tools and ability to do this task, I just need any inside info on how is the best way to approach it. Now I have another A2 barrel with sight I can take off and use those measurements if need be. But, aren't all of them slightly different? or no? Thank you for your time in reading and any input is GREATLY appreciated. |
| I would try taking the measurements and very carefully start drilling with a very small drill. If you hit the hole dead on then you can just take it out to the proper size. If your off a little then you can pull the hole with a little larger drill until you get it where you need it. I have drilled trapped Rivets out of the side of Damaged Airplanes using this method.Bigger holes true but more expensive parts. |

I want to avoid the clamp on at all costs. I will keep you posted. Thank you. |

Quoted: Work up the drill bit size and you need to ream to finial hole to size, not a drill bit, but a tapered reamer, standard A2 size. Winner Winner Chicken Dinner. Brought it to dear ol' dad who is a craftsman/machinist/brilliant. What we ended up doing is clamping the barrel in a vise. Then taking the vise and clamping that to the drill press. Taking the precise drill bit of the smaller end of the pin, he lined up the press with the barrel which has the holes already in place. So now the barrel is not going anywhere... When you slide the front sight on, the drill bit is already lined up where the hole should be. You just have to make sure the sight is level (perpendicular) ... He then drilled the first hole then the front one. Now, we took it to the bench vise and slowly reamed out the larger hole. AND WHO WOULD HAVE KNOWN HE HAD A REAMER THE SAME ANGLE AS THE PIN???? It worked perfectly. Thank you all for the suggestions... Now I have to finish assembling and all done. |

And no pictures... Damn!! Isn't there some kind of law against that?.. If not there should be. |
