I know to just unscrew it but, I have a 12" free float rail on a 16" barrel leaving only 3" of exposed barrel. So I cannot get my barrel vice on it as the vice is longer than the exposed barrel. The flash suppressor is installed with a crush washer. I am sure this can be done but how do I do it? This is a Midwest Ind. free float rail.

Unfortunately, the right way is to remove the free-float, place in barrel vise, remove FH.

Yes but how do I remove the handguard?

Assuming its not pinned, and the flash hider has flats for a wrench, use a strap wrench on the barrel and a wrench on the F/H, that is if you dont want to remove the FF-handguard.

I tried a strap wrench but it wouldn't grab, but then it is a cheap one. Have you ever done this?

I've unscrewed a bunch of them by putting the upper in a upper receiver vice block. Steady pressure should unscrew the flash hider. I hope it wasn't put on with a million pounds of torque. The upper receiver vice block is well worth the money if you're doing barrel, gas block or flash hider work. Good luck!

Receiver block store bought or homebrewed and a big lever if over torqued.  Good luck you're not the first to see this.  Bet it won't get re-installed that tight.  What's spec 20-30 ft lbs not 100-150.

Take a 3" piece of wood, drill a hole through it then cut the wood in half.  Place barrel in your homemade barrel block and in your vise.  3/4" open end wrench and take your flash hider off.
