A friend of mine is getting ready to retire after 27 years of service with the CA Dept. of Corrections. He told me the other day that one thing has always wanted is a M16 Replica of the rifle he carried in the USMC when he was a young man. I want to help him with this dream. I already told him that it cannot be a Colt, since all Colts have been deemed EVIL by the Socialist Replublic of Kalifornia. But if there is some way I can get pieces and parts to build one I would like to assist him in his endeavor. The one thing he was adamant about was the triangular hand guard. I cannot find anyone that produces the triangular guards. Can you guys point me in a direction to get this started? He is retiring in April, so I have a bit of time to do this.

Oops.  I posted this in the "Build It Yourself" Forum.

Sounds like he had an M16A1, I would go over to the Retro forum and ask there.  They would be better off to help you.

He said that it was an A2.  He stated that the A1 didn;t have a forward assist, but his rifle did.  I was in the USAF ('82-'92) and we had A1s, if I remember correctly.

A2s have the round hand guards. These folks have some triangular HGs

The M16 didn't have a forward assist, but the M16A1 did. If his handuards were triangular, and his rear sight only had one dial, then he probably had an A1.

Ahhhh....That was the difference.  Then we had M16s when I was in.  My friend must be mistaken about the A1/A2 designation.
