So I have a Redfield 6x40 scope rigged up on a carry handle mount for my 20" A2 rifle. Can remove it and stick it back on and it stays reasonably close to point of aim. I like to shoot irons so I usually keep the scope removed.
I have a little Leupold variable mounted on an identical mount(Leupold) for my 16" DTI carbine(also an A2). Son and I went shooting this evening..and he packed the gear after school and we left after I got home from work. Targets were still up from Sunday afternoon..and the kid setup and started firing with my DTI carbine and scope while I tinker around on the pickup tailgate with a Dragoon Colt clone(takes me about 10 minutes to load the thing).. I head to the firing line..and the son has the wrong scope on the DTI.. ..I ask him if he's hitting anything.."yes..shoots fine"..I ask him if he adjusted my scope.."No..just screwed it on"..So I try it out..and it's hitting fairly close.Maybe a little left and somewhat low but doable
So really?..Whats the odds of a scope and mount being close to zero with no adjustments between a 20" rifle and a 16" carbine? |

Usually will be pretty close when switching on flat tops if already zero'd. Especially if using similar mounts. Switching ammo weights has made a bigger difference in my opinion. I usually boresight my stuff but they are usually pretty close. Just need a couple clicks usually. Removing and re-installing usually gives me the same results and may take a couple shots to bring back. On my killing rifles (predators) I don't remove the scopes once set as a general rule. |
