Hi all, newbie here, recently got bit by the AR bug, purchased my 'tactical' AR and am working on a Vietnam look alike.

I had a question though for a potential A2 build, what is the grip style called seen in this pic:

and is it available minus the grenade launcher attachment? Ive seen them in the HBO miniseries 'Generation Kill' as well but always with the grenade attachment. I dont know why but I like the boxy look of it. Thanks for your help!

They can be found without the grenade launcher, but since they were made specifically to be used with it, the bottom of the handguard will be wide open. So it will be kinda useless without at least a 37mm flare launcher.

Ah this is a shame. Are there repro/deactivated launchers available? EG can a ordinary citizen get one thats just a look alike with no function? Does this style have a particular name attached to it? Thanks for your help!

The pistol grip is the standard M16A2 grip. Very cheap and easy to come by. They come with most lower parts kits that are available these days.

My apologies, Im afraid I didnt use the right term, is it fore grip? The area with the grenade launcher attached. Ive heard of the Vietnam ones referred to as 'Delta Grips' so I didnt know if grip was both the pistol grip and the front as well?

Im sorry Im very new to all this.

You should be able to pick up a flare launcher no prob. They are out there, I usually see them at gunshows. Oh and they are usually called handguards. welcome to ARFCOM!

Haha no problem. That's an M203 handguard, which was used in conjunction with the M203 grenade launcher. I have one for my A2, but it doesn't look right without the grenade launcher (which I'll probably never own), so I don't use it.

I be thinking if I had that handguard I would be saying up for a 37mm launcher. Are they not legally in your State??

Going to search the internet for M203 handguards and launcher.

Edit to add:
New M203 handguards $46.50 at Bushmaster
$99 for a plastic airsoft version on amazon
