I am building my first AR15, and need some advice. My goal is to build something that looks like a stock issue M16A2 from the early 90s, but have upgrades where not visible. I plan to carry this firearm in parades as a member of the VFW, but also plan to use it as a target rifle for Appleseed shoots and the like. Below are my ideas so far.
- Bushmaster 20" National Match Target Model Upper Receiver/Barrel Assembly - McKay stripped lower - Unsure of trigger group, but know I want an upgrade from stock - Unsure of bolt/carrier group, but know I want an upgrade from stock |

I'd suggest you go here to look for parts if your serious about parts for some target work at a decent price

| Though not totally intent on building, I do like the idea of picking and choosing the best parts within my requirements. I have looked at the ArmaLite National Match, and the main issue I have with it is the stainless barrel. If this was just going to be a shooter, I would not have an issue with the stainless, but I want to use the rifle in parades as well, so it needs to look the part. Any opinions on the Bushmaster National Match upper/barrel? Also, I have read good things about the Rock River Arms two stage trigger...any opinions on that trigger group? |
| Well, it is the stainless, and the lack of a flash suppressor. I have not checked to see if it has a bayonet lug either. These details may seem trivial, but I want the firearm to look correct while in uniform on parade. So long as it looks the part, I want the best internals possible within reason. This is why I am leaning toward the Bushmaster National Match barrel, but I am still open to suggestions. |
| I have a RRA NM upper, it comes with a free float tube with standard handguards over it. The sling swivel is attached to the float tube but sticks out just a bit so it is under the FSB where it belongs. You can get it with or without the bayo lug, mine has it; same for the flash hider. Im not crazy about the stainless barrel and plan on duracoating it matte black. I have a Jard adjustable trigger in it, it is very good. I also have 3 RRA NM triggers in different guns, it is also very good. The NM upper also has the improved sights, you wont be able to tell by looking unless you get up close to see the sight hood on the rear and use a micrometer on the front sight post. Buy with confidence. |
I have This Armalite upperand it is great. +1 to just paint it.
You could build the lower or buy a complete NM rifle like 86HMMWV said. ETA: I picked it up during the thanksgiving sale...or was it the 12 days of Armalite |

Have to have the hidden free float forend like the national match rifles RRA NM trigger is good but keep it lubed or it will lose the first stage with lots of shooting, I would get a timney single stage trigger at 3 pounds they are great.
Do you need the bayonet lug? Maybe a bayonet on parades? Lug so small most people do not notice it missing, now way they could see it in a parade. Snowman357 |
