I've built a lower using the MAG Tactical stripped lower and a PSA ACL-L parts kit, and have been thinking about what to get for an upper. The full uppers listed on the Adams website look to be an option if they're even in stock, but if I have to get a conversion kit what do I need to keep in mind with that intention? For instance, would a Seekins Billet Upper be compatible with the Adams conversion kit? The Seekins also uses a non-standard barrel bolt, so would that be a problem? What about handrails? Are you limited to the Adams handrails or could I, for instance, use Daniel Defense or Seekins? (Maybe use of the Seekins upper would restrict me to the Seekins rail systems?)
I know that the barrel has to be 3/4" in diameter where the FSB is located but do I need to get an FSB if I intend to use the conversion? What about the bolt and carrier group? The lit says that it comes with a one-piece carrier and spring, so do I just get a bolt and slide it in? Finally, is a piston system compatible with any/all red dot sights because of the heat generated? Are there special considerations on that? Anything else I should consider going forward? Thanks. |

Just picked up 14.5 inch tac-elite from vtsupply.com. Haven't finished lower yet though. From what ive read only heat concern is at the gas block. Congrats! Envy is a terrible thing... Putting together a lower was much easier than I thought it would be. I think I'm kind of sold on the piston system, but may have to upgrade to it later. (Well, actually I did have to chase that little buffer tube detente spring all over the room once.) |
| The main thing you have to worry about when it comes to a conversion kit is the barrel diameter and the proper gas length which kit you purchase. I believe the upper receiver you have would work. When it comes to rails look at their website they have a very discriptive list on which would work. If you can find a whole upper that would be the way to go since it would be cheaper in the long run. |

They don't mention Seekins on either list, which must mean that it's usuable with modifications. I have yet to determine if you can use different hand rails with a Seekins receiver. The narrow one (iMRT3 I think) might be a problem, just because it might not have enough clearance for the piston tube. |
| Is Adams still in business? I understand that the founder left to found Syrac Ordnance and their product line doesn't includ any piston systems. The Adams Arms website is still up but someone said that they don't have a location any more and that they haven't paid their dues to AR15.com. |

Of course they're still in business, and thriving to boot. Since December I've purchased 4 of their complete Tactical Elite uppers (2x 11.5" and 2x 16") and have had 2 out of those 4 serviced directly by AA as well. I would not worry one bit about them either being out of business or going out of business. In fact, they just moved, so things are almost certainly going quite well for them at the moment. |

Apparently Syrac is into manufacturing adjustable gas blocks and assembling uppers from various manufacturers and barrel makers. There aren't, as yet, any piston-system uppers or complete guns in their inventory. |
