I recently purchased a S&W M&P15 (milspec) complete lower and have been looking on gunbroker for a complete upper to go with it. I've seen some uppers that were piston uppers and wondered if they would be compatible with my lower. One piston upper I saw was an Adams Arms Piston upper. I asked my father the same question and he said he wasn't sure but he thought there was a chance that I would need a different buffer if I put a piston upper on it. What are your thoughts? Would it be best to just stick to a direct impingement upper? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The AA upper is GTG.

Anyone have any real advice other than the AA is GTG. I'm wanting knowledge not trying to learn shortcuts to real words.

That lower should fit any upper, piston or DI. You may need to tweak some parts like the buffer weight and buffer spring to get which ever upper you put on it to work 100%, but for the most part that lower should accept just about all upper assemblies on the market.

Question I would ask is what are planning to do with the rifle? DI will do the job. If you are going to a SBR rig with a suppressor with a barrel less than 10.5"

I had a AA piston carbine upper for a while mated to a PSA lower w/ a standard buffer tube. 500-1000rds with no problems and enjoyed the ease of cleaning.

AA is good to go.  I love mine.  It's VERY light as well.
