Do the bolt carriers on piston systems wear or break on a regular basis?  I've been told it's a good practice to keep an extra bolt or two around but what about the carrier?

I would go as far to say the bolt CARRIER on a piston rifle would be less likely to fail due to it being machined out of one solid piece. Their is no carrier gas key attached to the top of a carrier. The bolt itself is much more likely to fail (extractor in particular) no matter if its DI or a piston design. This being said, I wouldn't worry about a bolt carrier breaking on a DI rifle. Highly unlikely unless you are shooting under water .

The only thing I would worry about really is the bolt itself. Unlike a DI rifle where you got the pressure of the gas's acting to help push the bolt out of battery in a piston rifle your tearing the bolt out of battery and there for in theory putting much more pressure on the locking lugs. This of course though holds true unless your running a bolt spring which make the bolt want to unlock out of battery just like a DI rifle. Other than that though I honestly have never had a problem with bolt or BCG on DI or piston rifles.

I run the Adams Arms Bolt Spring ($5) on my SIG516 for the reason you mentioned above. Its been 100% so far.
