I've been looking at these guns for a long time now trying to decide which one to buy.  There are way to many choices.

I've finally narrowed it down to either a Bushmaster ACR or a Ruger 556.  Is there any reason to buy one over the other?

If you are going with a piston AR as your first AR, look into an Adams Arms complete rifle.  The Bushmaster and Ruger piston systems have received a less than favorable responses.  And I thought the ACR was DI?

I did a LOT of reading before I bought my Ruger, and I never read anything bad about them, other than being somewhat nose-heavy.
One thing to consider is that if you DO have a problem, Ruger's CS is second to none...Bushmaster, not so much.

Good to know.  Thanks!

Don't know what DI means?

Don't know what DI means?
Direct Impingement, regular gas system, not piston.

You might also look at the Sig 516. Most, if not all of the negative comments about them I've seen here were by people that do not own

one and have no experience with one. I love mine.

I looked at the Sig 516.  Actually I was very interested in the Sig 516 in 7.62x39.  But I saw several comments about the 551 that were, well, not good so I decided to stay away.  I was really surprised at that too because I thought that Sig had an excellent reputation.

KL, Sig DID have a stellar reputation.  In recent years, there has been a bit of a falling off in Sig's quality, and many reasons have been bandied about.  IIRC, there were some changes made on the Corporate side, and these have caused some issues.  QC, CS, what have you.  "Old Sig" is/was an icon in the firearms world, and they may still reclaim their glory days- right now, they may not be the best choice.  YMMV.

Different platform and not a fair comparison.

Bushmaster ACR is gas piston don't go spreading misinformation. I've met many people who are happy with their ACRs although I personally would not own one for the foreseeable future they aren't bad. Ergonomics are great on them but keep in mind it is a new manual of arms you have to get used to. If you go with the ruger which I recommend you might find it easier to employ if you have shot or used an M4/M16/AR15 family based weapon. From what I have witnessed taking friends who have never shot before out on my AR is that the AR is a very instinctive rifle. You pick it up and almost immediately know how to use it. As an AR user I found the ACR to be a bit awkward in terms of the bolt release when I first picked one up.

The biggest thing to keep in mind though is Bushmasters customer service. Not the best in the world and when it comes to quality no offense to them or anything but they aren't first on my list. Not saying that they put out a bad product but there is better out there.

It would appear that if money is an issue the best buy would be a S&W Sport.  If money isn't then the Ruger 556.
Thanks for all the help.

Stag Model 8 is a good option as well

Get the ACR. It is extremely comfortable, easy to use, no tools required to work on it or take it apart, cleans up more easily than almost any other rifle, fully ambidextrous and is awesome.

Thanks for all the input.  I've made my decision.

As money allows I'm going to buy them all.  Not every AR out there.  No one could afford that.  But I'm going to try to buy all the ones that I've been interested in.  My order of acquisition will be Ruger, S&W 15 Sport, S&W 15 TS,  Bushmaster ACR and, finally, the Colt Competition Pro.  Why not.  You only live once.  Now if I could only afford the new Colt Gatling gun.

That's how I'm doing it. If it interest me I buy it or buy the parts to start it or work on it. I like things that haven't really been tried or done before.

I believe it was GE who built the first gattling gun then the mini gun and eventually dylon aero improved and made them better and his company now makes them for .mil and other out of stat entities.

I would steer clear of the ACR, I would go Ruger SR-556 (that was my first choice too until I saw the SIG 516). I would go with the XCR over ACR. did they fix the ACR mag load issue already?

Yes I've seen his post.  Actually I downloaded the entire thing from his web site.  Wanted to be sure I knew why I wasn't going to buy from him again.  Odd thing.  Years ago one of my first AK's was from him and it was an excellent gun.  But, because of that posting, I wouldn't buy from him again.
