Hello everyone. I am starting my first gas piston build. I think that I have narrowed my search for an upper to Adams Arms and POF. Does anybody have anything bad to say about these?

Two totally different animals in terms of the manufacturing procedure...
There is nothing to be built with a POF... You either buy a POF or you don't... Having said that. My POF is the greatest rifle I own. Absolutely amazing, and reliable as could be. Don't retrofit an AR with a kit, buy one that is built to operate as a piston driven system, like a POF. Besides... the quality and components POF uses are superb. Frank really puts alot into those rifles. He is a good guy. |

The end product That I have in mind will be 5.56, 16 in hbar, mid length free floating handguard with a full rail up top. weight is not the highest priority. And I am willing to spend $1600 for a POF if it is the most reliable. I have spent a number of years with the M16 and have seen them treated brutally, and continue to work. I also own a Colt AR standard 20 in bbl with no modifications. Thousands of rounds flawlessly. I just want to be sure that a piston is an improvement on something that was already near perfect.
I would like this weapon to be durable enough for my unborn grandchildren to utilize. |

I was gonna buy a kit at first but I found a Bushmaster with a POF at my local gun store. I ended up buying it and as the other guy said a lot better than a kit. Want a piston buy a POF if you aren't going to modify one of your existing firearms.
Piston makes the AR pretty much perfect. Eliminates all the problems you have with a direct gas impregnation system. Bolt stays cool during shooting thereby extending they life of the weapon. Keeps the chamber a lot cleaner and you don't have to worry about the possibility of the gun exploding should you have a blockage in the gas tube. Cleaning is easy. Overall you can't go wrong with a gas piston if you want to make a perfect gun even better. First time I shot a piston I never wanted to pick up a gas blow back again.

Adam Arms makes complete uppers. I just finished a build and will be testing it out for the first time tomorrow.
I was considering other manufacturer's complete uppers before and I opted for Adam Arms. It was $580 compared to some of the others which may be almost $1000 more. The POF seems awesome but I felt like I didn't really need to spend that much to get the same reliability out of the complete Adam Arms upper. I see the difference in the two being: POF does NP3 coating which is really cool but personally I didn't need it and didn't want to spend the money on it. The POF barrels are 1 in 8 twist I think. I opted for the AA in 1 in 7 twist. I haven't read too much about the type of barrel that AA uses. I suspect that the POF outsourced barrels are "better" but I am not using my 14.7" barrel for long range competition and I doubt that I will ever shoot it out. If I do i'll buy another barrel at that point. If I was made of money I'd have a POF or LWRC upper. Since I'm not I decided to go simpler and I hope after testing it out tomorrow that I will be happy. The difference in price allowed me to buy the exact free float rail I wanted as well as pay for my Aimpoint T-1 and Larue mount. I just posted my build yesterday night in this forum if you want to check it out. |

That sounds real good. And your weapon looks real nice too. I am looking forward to your continued posts on your thread about its performance. I think you just changed my mind to this:
5.56 Midlength Tactical Elite | UA-16-M-TE-556 * Midlength Gas Piston System * Adams Arms 16” Chrome Lined Barrel * M4 Feed Ramps * 1:7 Right Handed Twist * Chambered in 5.56 NATO * 12" Extended Free Floating Quad Rail * A2 Flash Hider The Midlength Tactical Elite 5.56 Upper Retails for $1099 |
| Just to add some more choices you should check out addax tactical and see if they have something that fits your style. A couple months ago I was building my first and was tossing around POF and Addax. I went back and forth between the two and for no particular reason (besides maybe just a flip of the coin) chose addax. CS has been hands down amazing. Follow up was above and beyond what I would ever expect. Standing behing the quality of product they produce. It's been a remarkable rifle and I'm glad I chose this upper. I haven't looked back once. With that said I'm in the process of building a .308 and will probably go with POF since they missed out on my last build. Figured I would have one of each. |

I believe the only difference between the tactical elite and the standard is the free float rail. The tactical elite comes with a Sampson rail which is about 17 ounces. The Daniel Defense Lite rail is 11 I think? If you have the tools (upper receiver block, barrel nut wrench) then you can buy something like the DD Lite and the AA Standard and still end up spending less money than you would on the Tactical Elite. |
