I've heard that the army is testing piston systems. this is a step in the right direction and having a mil spec standard system would help with a few of the problems most guys have with the systems. I was wondering if anyone had any more information. piston systems are the future, regardless of what anyone thinks, just look at the fn scar,hk416, and most other rifles in development. not having carbon blown into your chamber is a good thing thats a given.

edit: here is an article i found, food for thought.

I had heard from the gun smith that works for us time to time that they were looking to adopt a piston system, not the hk416 thing, but something else.

The easiest thing they could do and most affordable I think right now is test and adopt a conversion. Than they could still make use of all the M4's and M16's we've got already. They license somethings like Adams system and bid out the pieces to be made. Than they can look at what to do for continuing to build new ones from there with the rest of the parts needed like the receivers, buffer assemblies, barrels, furniture and smaller parts to make complete piston M4's and SBR's.

One of my buddies who was Army SF was commenting on the HK 416.  He stated that some of his buddies said that SOCOM tried to address some issues with HK and were told tough shit.  I guess SOCOM told HK to blow.

I read about army special forces guys actually using HK 416s a good while back. They've been testing them and the other HK rifle (I can't remeber the name of) and the 416 for a good long while to. I saw some of it on the military channel. You can find some results on the web with a little google grease if you want.

HK416 for time being is only one actually fielded COTS piston AR-derivate. It has it's drawbacks, but not any weapon system in the world ever was completelly trouble-less. From my knowledge actual field use includes US SOCOM forces in Iraq and A-stan, Polish SF in Iraq and A-Stan, Polish Army QRF / strike forces in A-Stan and Norwegian Army in A-Stan. It is also deployed by several CT units (bouth military and LE) around the world. It almost complettely killed HK sales on G36 for CT units.

I'm here long enought to perfecly realize that HK is not loved on this forum, mostly beocuse of Not Made Here and past civilian customer (lack-off) relationship management by HK USA, but it seems that HK416, even without adoption by US Army is already a winner in global war for modern (non-AK) COTS assault rifle (not only for SF use). Other contenders are only from FN (SCAR and F2000) and HK itself (G36), offerings from US companies are now almost non-existent in this market (exclude give-aways for Iraq and A-stan armies -> this is not "market")

Please bear in mind that I only talk COTS, so no single $0.01 form taxpayers involed into development of system. Just call and place an order. For IAR competition HK took Norwegian 16.5" version on HK416 (HK416DR165N) and just added US bayonet lug, longer handguard and rail mounted sights - that's all R&D involved there. Compare this to rocket science that went into Colt or FN offerings.

From what I was told, HK just didn't respond well when told that their product had issues.  SOCOM or certain elements of it went back to a DI Colt.  I know my brother had tested that HK prototype plastic rifle concept.  If memory serves me correctly, he said it was a piece of shit, not in so many words.....  I know HK's customer service could use a revamping in the few dealings that I have had with them.

And for the record, I am an HK fanatic.    I love their pistols and personally think they are the best.  That is my opinion though.  I have carried and fired countless pistols and always found HK to be the best.  HOWEVER; I wanted to buy the P2000SK, but HK didn't take into account that the grip is way to short.  To the best of my knowledge, there is no grip extension available.

Good friend just got back from A-stan and said that the vast majority of SF he was around used (and loved) the SCAR.  No HKs around.  Slightly off topic, but maybe interesting.
