I had a local gunsmith install my carbine kit and went to the range today.  Major malfunction after about 50 rounds.  The piston wedged between the BCG and the chamber and locked up tight.  Anybody know what is wrong?

You should probably be asking this question of Adams Arms directly. They would know better than anyone here.

Did you call/e-mail Adams Arms?

A "gunsmith", eh?

Call us and Id be happy to diagnose your problem. The reason I say call us is not to hide anything from the forum but to ask questions that lead to a proper diagnosis
The Majority of issues with our system are due to improper installations.
If you look through AR15.com you'll see that we have hundreds of happy customers who have posted their personal experiences.
I believe we have more systems on the market then any other company and statistically things go wrong at times that's why we have a life time warranty.
I enjoy posts like this because like most of our customers already know our service here is unsurpassed.
The best way to resolve this is to call me but if you would like to walk through this for everyone to see I;m OK with that as well.

Sounds like the bushing that goes in the upper receiver probably fell out and the piston got wedged with the carrier.  The directions state that if the bushing goes in freely, it must be loctited and cured for 36 hours.  Sounds like this was not done.  Just my 2 cents.

I installed my AA kit 2 days ago (I had to hammer the bushing in).  Took it to the range and put 120 rounds through it without any issues.  I would have shot more, but I have a Magpul BUS and I didnt want it to melt. Great product.

This was my first thought as well.  Or the gunsmith didn't put the bushing in to begin withAA will make it right.  Call them.

I need to get an Adams Arms piston. Their customer service & warranty seem unbeatable.

Their system kicks a$$ as well.  I compared their system to the LWRC.  Asthetically, it looks very similar-not sure if it is or not.

The only negative comment would be about the installation instructions.  I couldn't find where I was supossed to put the bolt spring........yeah, I know.....on the bolt.  I just didn't see it pictured or explained (doesn't mean it wasn't there).  I put it on the bolt tail and it worked, so I guess it was OK

Seems like you should start with yout local gunsmith since Adams did not not install it.:)....
I like the idea of a pistol system just for running cleaner. Other than that is it worth the x-bucks? REALLY or more of a fad?

The jury's been out of deliberation for some time now and a verdict has been read. Just many people don't care what the verdict is. DI sucks compared to piston. I'll never own a DI again. It's one of the worst operating systems around as far as I'm concerned and that's what matters to me.

If you like DI just fine, good for you. It works well enough in a quality built rifle, properly maintained. This rifle the OP has doesn't sound quality built, simple as that. Now take the trolling somewhere else. If you don't like piston, don't post in the piston forum. Adams system is being run by many users currently and is running great for pretty much all of them. If you are interested in piston, your going to have to suck it up and give it a try. Is it perfect? No, but nothing is.

Isn't that like keeping the same people in power to fix the credit crisis as the ones who oversaw it happening in the 1st place?  I'd trust Adam Arms to fix it.

I called Adams Arms and they told me to ship my upper to me for repair.  What great customer service.  I am pretty sure that the installation was not done right in the first place by my gunsmith.  I trust AA to get it right.  I will report when I get it back.  Oh and to the poster that said pistons were for the young, well I am 56 and kiddo, it is just a number believe me.

Always take the time to carefully look into a mirror before starting a thread blaming the manufacture first.

"Adams Arms Major Failure"

It may very well be improper installation, which was caused by the dude in the mirror.
If not the company will solve the issue.
If not, then post post post.

There is another  bushing that stops the piston from travelling back too far.
It igoes in between the barrel nut and piston return spring.
Could it be that it either broke or was never installed?
