I have seen quite a few of them over the years, I remember when I was working in the Armory when I first went in the Army, we had hundreds of them, most of them got thrown in the garbage, but a few did survive, I know because I have a few of them!

They used to show up on Ebay every once in a while, that one if it is a real picture of the actual product looks to be in good shape, but I can say based on today's technology, they are a pain in the ass to try and use...

Maybe considered obsolete by today's standards (they are heavy and awkward) but they still work.  I have a PVS-2 and I'm happy with it.

Extremely good illustration, the suckers are heavy and trying to balance your rifle is not easy!

By the way, are those your guns?

I was really surprised by the effectiveness.  I had a cheap generation 1 viewer before and it is a piece of junk compared to the PVS-2.

There was a big PVS-2 thread last year. Mark Sims ended up with a really nice one for $300. I said fvck retro and built a PVS-14. LOL.

The ones I have have never been mounted, in fact they are in the safe, still in the O/D green pouches, I figured I would save a few of them when told us to get rid of them, which meant trash them, I don't know how many ended up actually getting thrown away and destroyed and how many ended up being "Disposed" of!

I don't usually post outside of GD. I have no idea who moderates this forum.

I'm going to go out on a limb and ask...Aren't they screwed if you take the endcaps off during the daytime? Serious question? No smartass.

ETA: I could have bought 100 of them over the years at Knob Creek. I passed. Should I have?

The one I have (bought it years ago and never really used it much) came with both the M16 mount and an M14 mount.

It has a big tag on it "ABC".  Automatic Brightness Control.  I suppose that means it's either a later model or it was modified at some point.

The reticle is a horizontal dotted line with a vertical dotted line on the bottom/center of the horizontal dotted line.  No upper vertical line.  It's also a green looking color.

Funny thing, I can see the reticle just fine.  My youngest son can't see the reticle at all.

It came with one of those little adapters for using 4 AA batteries in place of the original battery.

Good question, you shouldn't make a habit of taking the objective lens cap off during the day and I would never point the scope at the sun, even if turned off, but when the scope is turned off it should not be damaged by daylight. The active IR (generation 0, the scopes before starlight scopes) were more sensitive to direct sunlight when turned off.

I never was issued the PVS-2 with a M16 but was pretty much always issued one to go with the M60 that I always got stuck with.

I cant justify the cost of everything I would like to from that era. If my replicas were on display somewhere for others to enjoy that may be a worth while investment, but its neat to look at.
