Ok guys I don't have a "gun related" project going on right now and frankly I miss having something to tinker with.
So i've been toying with the following ideas: 1) A Pistol Caliber Carbine (I was looking into maybe building a retro inspired 9mm shorty but don't really know anything about these) 2) An AR10/ AR308 (This would have to be a modern variant, as much as I would love a fully stock original AR10 I just don't have the money) 3) Rehab a Retro Shotgun or a Police trade in 870 Help me pick a project please! |

I say you take on a build I've been meaning to do.
A shorty 9mm MARS style carbine Attached File using one of these PSA lowers. Attached File I would take it on if PSA had the lower and the wait time wasn't so long. Oh, and if I wasn't already waiting on like 12 forms 1s.

Well since I caused it I figure I should help you out If you want to do a shortened stock like the one on the MARS you can use the buffer tube, spring and buffer from the LWRC UCIW stock and cut a stock to fit the shorter buffer tube. Let me know if you want dimensions. Attached File I had the buffer tube (got lucky) and just had to order the buffer and spring which I think was like $30 direct from LWRC. |

Alright $203 out the door... let the fun begin http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m140/Aeneas2020/CED65915-7A3A-472C-8021-3084485F8C2C.jpg Nice. I sold my 870s, would like to pick up an older Stevens or Ithaca. The new 870s are "meh". I have no real use for a shotgun other than as part of the retro collection. |

I quail hunt with a browning over under that I love...this shotgun is going to be, well i'm not sure yet. I am toying with the idea of making a pseudo 50's/60's folding survival shotty with it or getting some wood furniture and going nuts with carving and refinishing the wood. The thing is now I really want to get an actually retro shotty |
Older 870s can be found pretty cheap but I went the expensive route to put one together.
Apex had older 870 police parts kits w/18" barrels, synthetic fore ends and speed-feed stocks available a while ago so I picked one up on an impulse buy. The aluminum trigger assembly showed a lot of external wear (maybe from a rack mount?) so I sat on eBay until I found a good replacement, then picked up a nice vintage Wingmaster receiver on GB that matched the finish on the barrel and put it all together. I'm still thinking about finding a nice riot gun wood stock set but they seem to go for a good percentage of the total of what I've already spent. |

Attached File It's not totally correct by any stretch, but it makes me happy. |

The stock and grip were painted Porto olive by John Thomas. After I put it all together, I realized the inspiration for it went all the way back to the 1964 GI Joe M16 that I had in the late 60's :) Attached File |

Me too. Damn. That shit is contagious. Two new rifles in this thread alone. Be warned, if you do not know already, that the "modern" AR-10 is a whole different critter compared to AR-15, although probably not as bad as the original guns are to get into. Everything is bigger, and not as handy, and more expensive. I still want one like tiger's however. Sucked in again, dang it. |

The Remington Model 870 has been around since 1950. It's right up there with the Winchester Model 12 and Ithaca Model 37 as being one of the iconic pump actions of the twentieth century. It was a well made shotgun before Remington was purchased by the large conglomeration. Is that painted wood?
This 870 was used by Brown Water Navy sailors during the Vietnam era, it's one of my favorites. If it wasn't for the ridiculous $200.00 tax fee for the privilege I'd build a replica. I own two both twelve gage, one with a twenty inch barrel with rifle sights, the other has an eighteen inch bead sighted barrel and a Remington magazine extension (I have no pics of that one). I also have a twenty-eight inch vent rib barrel with several sizes of rem chokes for it, I could have a hunting set up or self defense with the same platform. ETA: I am not a big fan of pistol caliber AR's but if I did a 9mm it would probably be quite modern and take Glock mags. ![]() Yep painted and stippled wood... quite annoying. Anyway I went completely off script with this thing because after getting it apart and taking the rust off etc I realized I just wanted to make it a truck shotty. So it got a coat of krylon and a new stock and i'll do some other weird stuff with it at some point too. |
