Ok guys I don't have a "gun related" project going on right now and frankly I miss having something to tinker with.

So i've been toying with the following ideas:

1) A Pistol Caliber Carbine (I was looking into maybe building a retro inspired 9mm shorty but don't really know anything about these)
2) An AR10/ AR308 (This would have to be a modern variant, as much as I would love a fully stock original AR10 I just don't have the money)
3) Rehab a Retro Shotgun or a Police trade in 870

Help me pick a project please!

Since it's your money, I say go with 1, 2 AND 3.

You're welcome.

Thanks Cal! The thing is if I go with 1.2 &3 I'll have significantly less money lol plus I need to stick to one thing at a time. I'm too easily distracted.

I like retro shotties bc they're still cheap. My current projects include Remington 870 Mk. 1, savage 67R-H and Stevens 77E. Here are the Savage and Stevens:

If you ho the AR-10 route, I like the retro feel of the AR-10B:

Shorty 9?  I like the 633 for that:

I say you take on a build I've been meaning to do.

I would take it on if PSA had the lower and the wait time wasn't so long. Oh, and if I wasn't already waiting on like 12 forms 1s.

I vote shotgun. I'd love to find a few on the cheap to rehab.

I'm not really a fan of shotguns, but I'd love to get my hands on a 1960's or 1970's Remington 870.

I wouldn't buy a new one. Another member is doing an M40 clone, so there's that.

My pick would be a trade in 870. Cheap, fun to build and can be made retro if that is the route you are thinking. I love putting the bayonet lug on them.

Darn it Banshee, I didn't know about these. And I have the lower from my 733 replica sitting around after I sold the upper. Now I'm forced to do one in 5.56...

Well since I caused it I figure I should help you out

If you want to do a shortened stock like the one on the MARS you can use the buffer tube, spring and buffer from the LWRC UCIW stock and cut a stock to fit the shorter buffer tube. Let me know if you want dimensions.

I had the buffer tube (got lucky) and just had to order the buffer and spring which I think was like $30 direct from LWRC.

Nice. I sold my 870s, would like to pick up an older Stevens or Ithaca. The new 870s are "meh". I have no real use for a shotgun other than as part of the retro collection.

I quail hunt with a browning over under that I love...this shotgun is going to be, well i'm not sure yet. I am toying with the idea of making a pseudo 50's/60's folding survival shotty with it or getting some wood furniture and going nuts with carving and refinishing the wood. The thing is now I really want to get an actually retro shotty

Aeneas,

IF you go the 9mm shorty route, I recommend the 80% 9mm lower from TacticalShit.com. It already has the mag well in it for a Colt system, so no need for a mag well adapter. Comes with the feed ramp and ejector.

I love it! I bought one a few years ago real cheap because it had a broken bolt rail. Easy fix. I converted it to a folding stock house gun. I love it and it was a fun project. Enjoy the build!

Older 870s can be found pretty cheap but I went the expensive route to put one together.

Apex had older 870 police parts kits w/18" barrels, synthetic fore ends and speed-feed stocks available a while ago so I picked one up on an impulse buy. The aluminum trigger assembly showed a lot of external wear (maybe from a rack mount?) so I sat on eBay until I found a good replacement, then picked up a nice vintage Wingmaster receiver on GB that matched the finish on the barrel and put it all together. I'm still thinking about finding a nice riot gun wood stock set but they seem to go for a good percentage of the total of what I've already spent.

It's an Armalite AR10A2 upper on a Aero Precision lower.  E type stock, Lonestar A2 grip, A1 Colt handguards.  The stock and grip were painted Porto olive by John Thomas.  After I put it all together, I realized the inspiration for it went all the way back to the 1964 GI Joe M16 that I had in the late 60's :)

Be warned, if you do not know already, that the "modern" AR-10 is a whole different critter compared to AR-15, although probably not as bad as the original guns are to get into.  Everything is bigger, and not as handy, and more expensive.

I still want one like tiger's however.  Sucked in again, dang it.

The Remington Model 870 has been around since 1950. It's right up there with the Winchester Model 12 and Ithaca Model 37 as being one of the iconic pump actions of the twentieth century. It was a well made shotgun before Remington was purchased by the large conglomeration.

Is that painted wood?

This 870 was used by Brown Water Navy sailors during the Vietnam era, it's one of my favorites. If it wasn't for the ridiculous $200.00 tax fee for the privilege I'd build a replica.

I own two both twelve gage, one with a twenty inch barrel with rifle sights, the other has an eighteen inch bead sighted barrel and a Remington magazine extension (I have no pics of that one). I also have a twenty-eight inch vent rib barrel with several sizes of rem chokes for it, I could have a hunting set up or self defense with the same platform.

ETA: I am not a big fan of pistol caliber AR's but if I did a 9mm it would probably be quite modern and take Glock mags.

Yep painted and stippled wood... quite annoying. Anyway I went completely off script with this thing because after getting it apart and taking the rust off etc I realized I just wanted to make it a truck shotty. So it got a coat of krylon and a new stock and i'll do some other weird stuff with it at some point too.

Well i have abandoned the retro gods. I just rattlecanned and threw an SGA stock on her (after cleaning off some rust spots etc) and took her to the range for a function check. Worked flawlessly no issues. This is going to be a solid truck gun for me and a spare for hunting. Now i'm really considering going and picking up another one to do some really retro with.

p.s. the SO wrote me a little note on the side in sharpie
