While test fitting parts on my early XM16E1 lower receiver, I came to realize that the transition bolt catch doesn't look quite right on the NDS lower.
Do the mounting ears need to be rounded off to be correct?
What time frame did the forgings go from smaller, rounded ears to the heavier more "blocky" ears?

Yes, the ears need to be rounded off.  ALL Vietnam receivers had rounded off ears, and I've done it on all of my builds.  I believe that the larger squared off ears were an M16A2 "improvement".

The "SAFE" way is with a file.  The fast and easy way is with a Dremal tool, IF you are very good with it and have a STEADY hand.  If you need a demilled receiver piece (or a high quality close up picture) to use as a pattern, let me know.  It makes it much easier to do the modification.  It also REALLY helps to LIGHTLY sandblast your alteration when you are finished with it.

The blocky ears came about sometime during the "full fence" receiver era much earlier than the A2's.

Looks like all the GM and H&R receivers had the larger squared ears.

The earlier rounded ears certainly look much nicer.
