In March I was fortunate to purchase this preban Colt with the factory Tiger Stripe Z-Cote and a fairly low serial number (GS000160) that I have heard and read is a pretty rare colt. My question is this: Would it make sense to buy a replacement barrel and BCG to preserve its value? Since this is my first and only AR and I really enjoy shooting it. Any recommendations? VinD

In Indiana & Kentucky you can still find SP1's for $1400-1500, with a little patience. My comment about buying a cheap shooter was not referencing SP1's, but rather one of the many clones in the $400-$700 price range. |

You'll need either an SP1 upper that will fit directly on your lower with that pivot pin or you'll need an offset pivot pin so you can use any upper with the smaller, standard pivot pins. This is the cheaper route but sometimes the adapter pins won't fit quite right. I had an SP1 upper and adapter once. It would pivot open and shut just fine on one receiver but on another it wouldn't at all I had to remove it every time I wanted to open the gun up. You just never know until you try. |

Thanks for the info! After seeing some of the other postings I went to my local GS to see what could be had. Lo and behold they had 2 complete uppers for $250 ea. One had a deflector and the other no. I bought the one with the deflector. Only issue, and it is a small one, is my AR has a large front pin and the complete upper a small one so I have to order a small pin conversion for about $10 bucks. |

OK here is the latest on my saga. Before putting the replacement upper on my colt I had to get a small pin conversion. Now ready for the range. Had nothing but trouble with the complete upper I had purchased. At 25 yards could even hit a 2x4 target anywhere! So I moved the target to 10 yards and tried again. Was shooting way right, adjusted the windage, still shooting right, adjusted some more, still shooting right. Adjusted till there was no more adjusting and at 10 yards was 5 to 6 inches right! On top of that it was jamming every 3 to four rounds. This sucks! so Local gun store (Greyson Guns) agreed to replace the upper with a newer one no cost difference. Put everything together again and back to the range (actually in store). The upper could be sighted in but kept jamming. It wouldn't eject the brass and would jam. Twice had a round jam in the breach so bad that had to use a cleaning rod to tap out the stuck brass. So the upshot is that gun store will credit my account for the 2nd upper and I will put the original upper back on and shoot it and not abuse it. |

Well, the colt is gone in a spectacular way! Shooting it today with Federal ball 5.56 ammo and it blew the side of the upper off, jammed the bcg into the barrel - check out how the bcg split, blew out the magpul mag, and bulged out the mag well enough to break the mag release off. Bottom of mag broke off and the follower was split in two. See the photos: <    |

On a side note, you don't happen to know the lot number of that ammo by any chance? If there is the possibility of a bad lot it would be a service to us all to be on the lookout. Again, sorry about the rifle though. That does in fact suck.

hey Guys, federal is going to look at the rifle at their cost to determine what happened. they have the lot number and said they will recall the lot. Federal wants me to ship my remaining ammo to them as well. I am watching the Yankees game right now, but will post up the info later. |

I am really more pissed at the loss of the gun. As for me the only injury is a bruised and shrapnelled left forearm. luckily no metal embedded and no cuts. When this sucker went off, the people on either side of me came running over to see what happened. I was jumping about a bit as it was stinging from the bits and pieces that hit me. have all my parts and eyes, so am grateful. |
