Browsing through my local pawnshop I stumbled across this AR-15. Its a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 lower that someone had tried to piece together an upper for. I could instantly tell it was a retro upper and the price was right so I brought it home. First thing I did was pull it apart to take the upper off. Lucky me, the BCG is Colt marked as well! So I think I have a 603 upper and bcg. I wanted to see if any of you guys could spot any other parts on the upper that are retro colt parts as well. Specifically the front sight base, muzzle brake, or charging handle?  I swapped on a cheap anderson upper and bcg to put it back together.  Planning on getting a NoDak lower and doing some kind of retro build. Any suggestions? TIA!

Hopefully these images work...

Interesting,  Looks like a legit later A1 bolt carrier. The upper is  C     H   forge code seams the ch is spread out different
than I'm used to seeing. I cant tell by the pictures if there is colt acceptance stamps,  but it doesn't appear to have them.
Barrel is an M4 profile  after market product as best as I can tell.
I am no expert and I am sure the experts will way in. Nice find on the parts though.

There is what I believe to be an acceptance stamp near the dust cover. A "C" inside a box right?

You May be right, sometimes after a refinish its hard to see those acceptance stamps. My
computer monitor is not that great so I could be missing it.

Upper and BCG are retro correct.  Can't tell on CH.  Need a pic with  removed.  FSB too large in diameter at .750.  Can't tell on FH pic but if open slots 360 degree A-1 if closed on bottom A-2.  Almost looks open A-1 by index of wrench cuts.

Upper almost looks refinished or a little grainy but easily could be pics.  Cool find and thanks for sharing.  Any markings on the barrel in front of FSB? Got a pic of port door? Is it small rectangle pad or A-2 modern square?

Welcome to retroland.

It is an A1 flash hider.

Yes, 360 degree cutouts on the FH. Complete with a split washer, which I never even knew they utilized.

Nothing that I can see on the charging handle

Acceptance mark on the upper. I don't think its refinished. Probably just my horrible photography skills.

Dust cover. Unfortunately doesn't stay closed. Think the latch is worn out.

Also, nothing on the barrel. The feedramps didn't match the feedramps on the upper and it wasn't drilled for the front sight block. So I drilled and installed the taper pins. No markings anywhere that I can see, I'm pretty sure its aftermarket, but have no idea whos...

My best guess is they got their hands on one of the demill parts kits or purchased some of the pieces from one who did.  Upper is 603 less the later forward assist and kits were barrel delete.  Pretty cool.  Think the kits dated to later 70's by accessories and some of the serial number tags with kits.

Cden nailed it.

Probably the build was based on a Malaysian M16A1 kit from RT or the SG.

So sounds like the FSB and barrel are out. Flash hider is retro, any opinions on the charging handle? I'm trying to save all the parts I can because I think I'm going to throw some paint on the gun and use it as a truck/beater rifle. Don't want to have to scrub paint off later!

CH is true milspec by pin location.  Without handling all adds up to be Colt based on other pieces.  As stated I'd wager pieces were from a parts kit off a de-milled M-16A1.  They were barrel delete per BATF demill.

Kit should have had a FA LPK, stock assembly and barrel pieces. Couple vendors did part them out.   Furniture from last batch was mostly toast but yours could have been from one of the previous kits where condition was much better.  Yours looks better than most from the last batch with a couple exceptions.  Does look like it got used a bit by BCG anyway.

Thanks for your help guys. I'll set the upper, bcg, flash hider, and charging handle aside for a retro m16A1 build. Get a lower from NoDak and source some furniture and barrel. Any opinions on where to get some of the pieces? Specifically small pieces for the lower? Retroland seems to be a deep dark hole that my wallet isn't going to like...

As far as I know HKILLER doesn't have an online store, best bet is to send him a PM or an Email.
