I have a spare NDS 601 lower and a like new Colt SP-1 upper that match (color wise) perfectly. I kinda want to build a Colt SP1 clone, but I keep thinking, what's the point, if I can still get a real Colt for a reasonable price. Does anybody do this? I used to have an SP1 in the early 80's, and loved it, so light and simple. Traded it for an over/under skeet shotgun like an ass. Or is there another retro use besides 601,602 for this receiver set. Already have a beautiful 601 built. 604 would be nice but the lower is wrong. Suggestions are appreciated

Slap an M4 barrel on it and you have a handy AF Carbine. I'm sure that combination served at point.

That's my current build. I had an sp1 and sold it years ago. Since then I've built 2 604s, 2 603s ,and a 653,but I still want that sp1! I'm using a 604 upper (gi) a nodak 601 lower and one of the boywonder777/john Thomas barrels. It should be done before new years!

If it were me, I would sell the upper & lower to someone who wants to do a 601 or 602.  I would then use that money, and the money I would have spent building a replica SP1, to buy a REAL SP1.  A real SP1 is still relatively easy to acquire, and it will hold its value, and/or appreciate in value.  I only build replicas when I can't afford the originals. That is just my two cents worth.

That was the main hesitation on the SP1, but to get a decent Colt you're gonna spend about $1200-1500, the clone would end up at about $500-600 (half), but yes the Colt is money in the bank, they will keep going up. But building is way more fun than buying, and the rifle I would build I would shoot the crap out of and not worry about it. Good point though Indy

I had this for a while,  NDS lower,  604 upper. Great shooter.

It wasn't a clone of anything, just a nice carbine.

If you shop around carefully, you will still find individuals walking around gun shows with SP1's in the $800-$1000 price range.  Just two weeks ago I saw a guy carrying two really nice SP1's for $1000 each, or $1800 for the pair. The average joe will not shoot out a barrel in their lifetime in semi-auto, so I wouldn't worry about shooting a real SP1.  I agree that building is more fun than buying, but I would rather spend my part searching time on more rare models.

jrs

did you glue in your pivot pin bushing on the upper or do you have just in there loose?

It is sitting loose. No issues. Just have to make sure it is positioned properly in order to make sure the takedown pin can pop through.

i see little wrong with SP-1 clones.

you're very close to 604 land anyway, just like it was on the day.

Love the A2 grip thrown into the mix! That will keep them thinking for a while. Love this carbine, it might just be the photo, but that barrel looks really long.
