Hey everyone, I thought I would share one of my other passions and that is reading and writing. The last few years I have been somewhat of a book junkie. I used to read nothing but Vietnam first person accounts about their time in the war. I branched out and started reading fiction. Not just war fiction but fiction of all genre's. I read very little fiction in my earlier teen to adult years. What fiction I did read were about Green Berets and LRRP's.
I was on a website looking around for books about MACV-SOG. I found a book series by an author named Eric Helm (house pen name for two Vietnam Vet's) called Vietnam Ground Zero. I later found out after reading the first three books in that series that I had missed the original series called Scorpion Squad. The books are great. You can really tell whoever the authors are they were there. I will post a link to those books in series order so that you can check them out. I had to use Amazon to find them all. I did get lucky when I found a few on Paper Back Swap and Book Mooch. Eric Helm - Vietnam Book Series. Scorpion Squad Vietnam Ground Zero Super Vietnam Ground Zero Now the other books that I have found that venture into Vietnam or into a lot of 70's and 80's pulp fiction are as follow - Phoenix Force by Gar Wilson (Awesome cover artwork on these or at least the ones I have bought) Phoenix Force by Gar Wilson Executioner By Don Pendleton Mack Bolan By Don Pendleton Stony Man By Don Pendleton This link is also to the same site but with a different list of Don Pendleton books. I'm sure there are more books from the late 70's on into the 90's that I am missing. I have been hunting these books down for a little while now and I'm finding more and more new authors or authors under different names writing the same type of fiction. A book that I wrote and published called Justice was somewhat inspired by the book series listed above and the original movie Walking Tall. I have a feeling that my book will turn into a series. The father in Justice served in Vietnam while the son served in Iraq. So what are some pulp fiction type of serial novels that you have read or know of that would fall under the retro type of theme? Post them up. I'm always looking for new things to read. |

The Guardians by Richard Austin (blanket pen name, several people actually wrote the stories), pretty decent early 80's action stuff
The Survivalist by Jerry Ahern, the first 10 books are pretty good, but it drops off in quality after that Casca series by Barry Sadler (Barry wrote the first several books, but handed off the series later) |

I think I have heard of The Guardians. I wonder if that series is one that is also going today like Stony Man is? |

The main writer, Victor Milan, wrote the best ones and did a sort of homage to the series in the Death lands (I think) series. Death Lands is another one worth checking out. You can look up Vics website, he lists everything he wrote under pseudonyms on it. I forgot Doomsday Warrior, those were over the top 80's post apocalyptic cheese. |

I still have this book in my collection. Part of the Saigon Commandos series by John Cain.

Thanks for posting the link and author too. I had not seen this series. I have a couple of fiction books that I need to look at later. I think it was written by a guy who served and wrote about his time in Vietnam. I think or I want to say he was LRP or LRRP. I think the book is called The Hill by Leonard B Scott. and Charlie Mike by Leonard B. Scott and I think there was one more in this series. He has another book book called The Expendables but not sure if its part of the other books. Here is the link to the Boonie Rat seires by Jonathan Cain Mike Force by L.H. Buruss is another book that I read that was really good. |

I can't believe nobody has suggested Gentle Propositions by our very own RTUtah. He's supposed to be hard at work on the sequel but he's probably slacking off. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1604816_Gentle_Propositions____BOOK_IS_LIVE_ON_AMAZON___.html ![]() |
