Good find if its SP00022, not SP100022.

Does that serial number even exist outside of the original executives and VIPs that were given the first ones off the production line.

I acquired this from a high up who used to work at colt. Along with many others he said he got them from the archives. I can figure out how to post pics from my iPad to this forum.

Does that bolt release look right for that period?

Here is one that people tell me does not exist. But here is a pic any info would be great  beside this one I also have #3 and #77. But this is one for the books I think.

A lot of things didn't look right to me either so I called colt. They believe that the test gun was destroyed and serial number 22 was reused in 1966 which would make it look right. Does this sound right to you guys and will this affect the value after all it still is factory made number 22 right.

#17 looks the same as yours, still worth some bucks, how does number 3 look?

Here is a model 656 upper from what I have found this was a prototype. Any info would be great and this is a colt upper not a reproduction.

I agree 17 does look the same so I think that was a reused number also

Guess this does show that those early receivers were built later (i think i read that somewhere) as i see some later parts. the bolt catch isn't the transitional one, the selector isn't dimpled, and the FSB looks forged and not cast.

Kinda makes me feel better that my 64 SP1 is older than number 22 LOL

What are the barrel markings on #22?

The story (read around here) was that the first 25 receivers were reserved for executives or key personnel involved in development of the SP1.  For a long time, we assumed that meant those rifles had the earliest features, but later research indicated that those "early" receivers weren't built into complete rifles right away, so some of them have "later" features.

That is definitely one I'd want a Colt historical letter on, then I'd start sending photos and notes to the Colt historian, trying to document as much as possible.
But I'd start with getting ALL possible info from that person who used to work at Colt.

Does the lower have a pkus on the other side of mag well?

Sorry don't know what pkus is. But it does have a cross on the mag well if that is what you mean.

Plus or cross lol.

What does the cross mean? Is it good or bad that it is on there?
7/15/2015 7:21:41 PM EDT

My +1 was me agreeing with post directly above me. My 68 SP1 has a plus sign near front pivot pin. It is a mystery to me why those are there.
7/15/2015 7:35:34 PM EDT
[#30]
That plus/Cross/X is a registration mark, forged into the lower, used to measure off of for machining purposes.

Thanks for the info mystery solved

Wait, reread things, and now I'm confused and not sure if I'm talking about the same thing you guys are.

The Plus/Cross I'm talking about is on the right side, just under the ejection port, near the pivot pin, as seen on the 601 lower here:

Is there another on the left side of the receiver (I don't remember seeing that before), or are you talking about a different 'pkus'?
7/15/2015 8:06:26 PM EDT

Yes that is the plus I have

Anybody know when they quit putting the plus, x, whatever on the SP1 lowers?

I believe it was around 1970, my 1968 has one and my brother's late 1971 does not.
