Went to the gun show at the Philly Armory yesterday (Sat) and got a few items. First is an upper that seems to be a mix master. 16" C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7 marked pencil barrel with 6 hole Colt hand guards, correct FSB and A2 flash hider with peel washers. Most interesting part is the Colt A1 upper, CH forge code, no proof marks, and a large pivot hole. There are no feed ramps, so I would think it is a rifle upper, not carbine. It also does not have the clearance recess in front of the takedown lug for an auto sear. It is possibly a Sporter receiver? I will have to get an adapter so I can use the upper for something.
I also got 2 nice Colt BCG's for a good price. I got some 20 rnd mags with alloy followers. 4 have Simmonds M16/M16A1 floor plates, and the other has Adventure Line on it. |

It does sound as though the A1 upper is from a SP1. |

The major differences between the 6420 and the SP1 carbine were the markings (Sporter II vs SP1), flash hider (A2 vs A1) barrel twist (1/7 vs 1/12) and stock material (plastic vs aluminum). Here are a couple of pics from a GunsAmerica auction. Looks like the only non-original part is what appears to be a Lonestar grip. ![]() ![]() |

Quoted: Blackrifle dot com seems to infer that SP1 had no forward assist at all. I don't know about Sporter models. This upper has a teardrop FA. My research here on AR15 seems to point toward the barrel being of A2 descent. Oh, the delta ring is straight too. Unless you can see markings where it may have been disassembled, I'd still lean toward a factory 6420 SPII upper – perhaps an early model with the flat slip ring. From what I've read, they ran the gamut from slick A1 style uppers, to forward assist only, to forward assist with built-in case deflector, and maybe some large pin A2 uppers toward the end of the run. The name & model number were changed in 1988 to 6520 Government Carbine. More info here from the archives. |

It does have barrel vise marks on it. There really is no telling what the origin is. I must admit when I attach a lower with a fiberlite stock, it feels like a toy. I'm not complaining at all. I will just have to get another lower, get it engraved, and do a little machine work to it. Quoted:

I wish I could find stuff like that at our local shows. If it isn't shiny new tacticool, nobody sells it. |
