Just saw this, it's about to end (not mine) Everything looks SP1 except the furniture but it's called an A2 sporter. You think it came like this originally? Is that price fair, with the numbers scratched into the lower?

Just like the one I picked up last night. I paid $890 for mine, but I did get a good deal on it. Mine is in very nice condition.

At some point, the one you are looking at may have been a department issue rifle. That would explain the numbers etched into the receiver. These rifles were made from around 1986-89. The early ones had SP! type uppers with A2 stocks, pistol grips, and handguards.

not just like,... yours has true A2 rear sights, makes sense

Not sure about pricing, but I think all of the SPII/AR-15A2 rifles came with A2 barrels, even though they may have earlier C7-style uppers. The rifle on auction appears to have an A1 barrel. There has been mention here on the forum that some may have had 604/SP1 style uppers but I haven't seen anything definitive. The finish seems to match pretty well, so it may have been on there for a long time even if it's a replacement.

Yep. I completely over looked that. His is one of the earlier AR-15A2 Sporter IIs.

Also note that the description says, "the firearm(s) shown is not likely to be the firearm(s) that will be shipped to you!" so who knows what you would actually receive.

This one almost looks like they took a SP1 upper and put A2 handguards on it. Colt was reknowned for doing things like this back in the '80s. Maybe they did not have the A2 1/7 barrels at the time some of the early AR15A2 Sporter IIs were made. Who knows?

I wonder if the barrel is 1/12 or 1/7?  It would have to be a VERY early sporter II.  They did a name change so it could be sold in states that banned AR15 by name.  I'd throw A1 furniture on it and call it good!

To me, with that barrel profile, it may very well be a 1/12, but sometimes picture angles can be deceiving.

Looks like a SP1 upper on a Sporter 2 lower...

When did Colt start using the .170" hammer and trigger pins?
