Any idea how the stamping would have been that off? I assume there's some jig that is used when stamping the forgings.

I can't comment on what caused that, but that isn't the first sportster I've seen like that.

SP II would have been early 80's

First AR I ever owned was the good old preban Colt Sporter A2 20" Government Profile 1/7. Damn fine rifle.. That one has a fugly lower but I love them all.

I'm inclined to think the jig that holds the lower was straight, but the stamping die wasn't seated perfectly in the roller. If the lower wasn't seated properly in the jig, it probably would've broke once rolled.

SAFE and FIRE look a little crooked too, but not quite as much as the legend. Maybe a trainee was in charge of replacing the stamps that day, or like mentioned, Monday morning with a fuzzy head.
