Have not seen any in quite some time! Anybody do anything new recently? And, I,m stll needing a front sight if anybody would be willing to part with one.

I was looking at the pics before I read your post. Who's is that? Super nice.

Chief is working on one, I'd love to know how far he is. I do know he has a Proto FSB and was sourcing the NDS-32 upper.

Once we get the new batch of forgings in we will be doing more of the NDS-15U uppers.

Probably sometime next summer.

Yes, I am working on a Prototype.  I have almost all the parts needed, with the exception of a decent barrel, that I will need to send to JT for completion.

I will be using a heavily modified 604 Upper Receiver unless I can find either an older Trigger Charging Handle NDS-32, or it's replacement, the newer NDS-15U.

I have already been in contact with JT, for he is going to do the Upper Half assembly, and also doing a Mottled Brown finish on all the furniture.  I am getting a few more parts from JT,

like the Flash Hider & Split Washer and the Horizontal Lined Mag Button.  The Lower Half is almost complete, as noted.

I will post a pic or two of the parts that I do have soon.

This is great news!

This thread opens up a wound for me. I watched and studied proto types convinced myself I had to have one. I call up NDS, card in hand, set on ordering both a lower and upper. Only to have them tell me I was too late. They sold their last upper the week before. We both got a laugh when they asked, what the hell did you wait so long for?

Love the proto types, dam near as hard to build as the 607's!

I'm working on as I can afford 'em, small parts. I do have an FSB which I won't sell, but they are out there.  I'm needing one of those muzzle breaks.  Gonna buy a set of those handguard from nodak soon. How in the heck did they work a functional mag release button with a flush area on that build?

A few years ago, I made a button like that; and I know this is hard to believe, but... I can't remember how I did it.  I'll expend some brain cells, and I'm sure it will come to me.  I'll follow up when I remember.

John Thomas

-UPDATE- I remember how I did the mag button now... With the button removed, I brazed some filler in the top surface of the entire button and in the top edge of the hole, then I smoothed it and cut the serrations.  Then put it all together.

Sorry, I meant bolt release, but that mag button is cool as well.

I believe that's an NDS lower, in which case, they did it just like the originals. There's a slot inside the lower and the bolt catch pin drops into it. The only difference is that the repros use a solid pivot pin where the originals used some kind of rare spring pin.

Hey quick question. I remember there was some discussion about having to use modified mags in the prototype lowers that you guys were (then) discussing producing. Do the ones you actually made use unmodified mags, or do they have to be modified?

Great point. Mag needs to be modified, as in the hump removed from the left side. There is no channel in the magwell on the NDS proto lower. Have not modded a mag yet personally, so am curious about others' how to steps.

KYgun,

Where did you find the source for the muzzle brake ??

Thanks,

He doesn't have the prototype muzzle brake, he says "I'm needing one of those muzzle brakes". He has a proto FSB which he said, "No, I won't sell".

You can see the lack of a broach cut in the left side wall on the lower.

ETA: disregard the pivot pin in the pics. That was just a hunk of drill rod I used for the mock up. The pin that ships with it is longer and nicer.

So, is the button being made and sold or the lower?

From the wording on the website, it appears the bolt catch and pin, spring come with the NDS-15 Prototype lower.

                                                      NDS-15 Lower

Includes stripped lower and bolt hold open kit (BHO, pivot pin, special spring) only

Mine stalled out a couple of years ago , give or take.
I've got all the important parts but ran into a wall with
The fiberglass weave on the stocks. One of these days I'll get around
To experimenting with it but I keep getting sidetracked on other projects.

Ha.. No I know the rules. I've actually moved that stock to the 601.
I do plan on using it as a template to make a few wood ones that
I can wrap with the fiberglass weave and use on the prototype .
Nobody will ever know it's wood. But I might try my hand at synthetics
Too..... Eventually

That is a great idea for making a repro stock. In for posts and pics. My proto has stalled too. I have it together, but it needs FSB pinned, barrel turned, etc. Would sure like a bayo collar if one could be found .

Anywho. Your parts-fu is impressive, Sensei.

Thank you. I'll post pics and see if anybody has any interest in some stocks
When I get around to it. I had JT modify the hand guards so that I could use them
As templates also. I'm  going to do one piece handguards
The same way as the stocks. like the nodak/ armalite ones, but they have always looked
Just a little to big to me. Damn retro OCD .
I'll keep everybody updated when the time comes.
I've got the 606/655 bug right now

They are. They're probably sized right for an AR10 but they're too big for a "proper" prototype. I forget the dimensions I came up with but, the real ones were very thin, just like the rest of the rifle. Those prototypes only weighed in at around 5 lbs unloaded.

I am working on a sorta 606. Got an HB from someone... Put it on an upper and waiting for the weather to improve. So many projects, so little time and money.

That's almost too lite.  I finished a modern gun not long ago that
Came on at 6lb with optic and it feels strange.
I might put a heavier barrel on my proto and neck I'd down
At the fsb just to have a little weight

Very true. I'm pretty sure I've bitten far more retro than I can chew.
I'm on the ten year plan. A606 wasn't really on the list .,
But I guess we know how they goes.  The bipod is just too cool
