Hello I am a little new to ARs but wanted to put together one with an A2 upper.  I am having a little trouble finding out who still manufactures an A2 upper.  I am looking to buy a complete upper (or complete rifle)  and would prefer one with a 14.5 barrel but not afraid to get a 16" one and have it cut down.  I thought Colt still made one but I don't find them on their website. I am hoping there are still ones being made by some quality company. It is a gun that will be used a good bit so would like to find a quality one. Thanks for any help.

You can go to Gun Broker.com and search M16A2 or you can ask the some question under the "A2 Builds".

The Rock River Arms Model LAR-15 CAR A4 with optional A-2 upper receiver will probably be the best shooting complete 16" new A-2  you can purchase  today and hold it's re-sale.  Also available in complete  upper receiver barrelled assembly only or in mid-length with free float,  two stage NM FCG,  etc.  All in what you want to do with it as to which model to buy.  If going the RRA path check site vendor Legal Transfers.  Pete has been serving the AR15.com community with their RRA needs for quite some time with nothing but high praise.

There is a difference between putting one together and purchasing a complete rifle.  The RRA is a very nice piece but personally I prefer to build my own and add my personal touches.  If you decide to build you can purchase a stripped A-2 receiver,  add sight parts,  assist and door fairly easily.  I say this as I'm not aware of RRA selling a less than 16" barreled anything that isn't designated as a pistol but they do  list 14.5 medium weight,  and LW barrels in new 2015 catalog.  All the 14.5 barrels do appear to be chrome lined.

If parts are available they can probably put together what you want and they are known for shooting very well.  If I was building and customer wanted an A-2 with 14.5 barrel  I'd personally use a Colt barrel more than likely and pin a phantom on it as they can be had if one shops a bit for less than the RRA list price of $255.  Not saying better just high quality for probably a little less.  CDNN has stripped A-2 upper receivers on sale and A-2 sight assembly without NM pieces can usually be had for $30ish.  Figure even shopping for deals probably $110-120 in the A-2 receiver all new if you assemble yourself.  Pay a vendor and they will run more than that.  Colt all new will be considerably more unless super deal is found.  Arsenal refinish Colts are bringing close to build it new price.  As stated you have stumbled into the retro forum.  Good luck with purchase.

Site vendor J&T / Doublestar also has a custom shop and still list a couple items with A-2 receiver mostly 9MM or SBR.  Ask for Judy if she still works there.  Had good luck with J&T but for A-2 as stated above I've always simply built my own using surplus Colt or FN parts.  I did build a BM DCM out of parts a few years back but they clearanced out theirA-2  uppers for $29.95 before being bought out and I honestly haven't looked at their site since they took a dump on their employees.
