Picked up a DOE 9mm frontend including the Barrel, Hand guard, Delta Ring, Barrel nut, Front sight, Port door and case deflector. Which type of upper would be correct and what am I going to need to complete a firing lower?

If we are talking a clone Dept. of Energy type 9 m.m. SMG...
A carry handle 9 m.m. upper. No gas tube hole, A1 type rear sight. Or a copy. Nodak Spud comes to mind. Make sure it has NO Brunton bump. C7's wont cut it Lower can be new production with the most subdued markings you can find... Delaware Machine comes to mind.
Lower should be equipped with a fiberite, or a vinyl coated CAR stock. I have a Garrison based clone with a one piece handguard. And a threaded barrel to host a can, with a later production fiberite. Authentic ? NO. But as fun as anything without a FA selector can be. Edit to include, no case deflector on uppers forging. |

Original 9mm uppers are slick side (No Forward Assist) - In truth you can use a Fwd Asst upper, however it won't be historically accurate nor will the fwd asst provide any benifet - Not that they do much anyway in 5.56. True 9mm uppers won't have a gas tube hole or X because they don't need a gas tube being blow-back.
Its harder to find stripped original9mm uppers in the wild than slick side SP1s or M16s You can find slick side SP1 uppers for reasonable here and there on the EE but need to use a large hole adapter bushing - a $3 part. The slick sided M16 uppers show up here and there but seem to command a high price these days. Good luck and please post picks of your project. These sound like an interesting pistol project or SBR. |

I used a DPMS lower and a Colt upper on mine. http://www.ar15.com/media/viewFile.html?i=15245 Didn't I tell you to stop posting pics of that? |

Here's one that belonged to my brother in law. Sadly, it is no longer in the family http://i.imgur.com/jrqeql.jpg http://i.imgur.com/YugGql.jpg http://i.imgur.com/6E9zZl.jpg edit: apparently I can't embed pics yet? Anyways, it's a DOE on a registered lower Very cool! |

Been wanting to turn this into a DOE, but it shoots so well I haven't been able to justify it. http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt118/fortis120/9mmAR_zpsfaf51602.jpg Hell, just build a 2nd upper... |

M16A1 style, late 70's early 80's. Not an A2 style with a finger rest. However it looks just like it (minus the finger rest). NO mottling. Nylon color. |

Damn You Guy's. I've always wanted a Colt 9mm Carbine, but never got one. And I have intentionally stayed away from the 9mm & Pistol Forum because of it. And now this thread is here and I just keep looking at these 9mm AR's. So now, I am tossing it back & forth, Pistol OR Carbine, Pistol OR Carbine, Pistol OR Carbine? |

I'm increasingly tempted to do a DOE build - but I know that honor could never be satisfied without a pinned in mag-block in an A1 profile lower and a Form 1 ...
~Augee I have one of these in work, and hopefully I'll be able to complete it soon and post some pictures. I've been waiting forever on this form 1. John Thomas |

Now I just need to find the rest of the parts. Finestkind What are you looking for? I'll give the "good luck" on finding an a1 9mm upper. I've been searching for months, and when one pops up for sale, it's either snatched up quickly or very pricy. I can't begin to count the times I'm 20 minutes late seeing one online that I missed. It makes my eye twitch thinking about it. |

The thrill of the hunt right. 9 mm uppers don't pop up much, I can't remember the last one I've seen. You can always use a 223 upper till one comes along. That's what I did. You can't tell except for the gas tube hole. But it's pretty well covered by the slip ring. |

What's the contact info for the maker of the DOE 9mm Kits? Ha . Knew you couldn't hold out! Braceman made all mine, but somebody else is making them And listing them on sturm . I'm forgetting his name ,,,, Can somebody help. ? IIRC there was a thread in retro last Aug/sept/Oct on it. I'm on mobile, so my search is slightly difficult. |

I got my DOE Front Sight Block from Garrison Manufacturing years ago.
They're still around, but I'm not sure if they're still making 9mm parts: [email protected] And since we're posting pics. . .
Colt Upper (back when they were easy to find), Nodak lower. Colt Mag Blocks, Matsucorp hanguards. (Sorry I'm in CA, no SBRs for me. . . |

Good job on pinning the block - few people commit. I really like the idea of a DOE 9mm pistol as a travel gun. |

Well, I got very lucky and "F4ENUT" had a 9mm upper that he sold me for a very reasonable price. Thank You Barry. I have assembled the majority of the parts and paired with a generic A2 lower. Somewhere I have a Hann mag block just have to find it. Still needing the bolt, carrier and a1 rear sight assembly. Will keep updating as I make progress. And yes Pics will be coming.
